1	What's up with the lack of women in STEM? What's causing it? Engineering is hardly about "fixing machines". You're confusing mechanics with engineers. Engineers design, manage, and build, they don't typically sit down and repair something. Engineering is also far more diverse than just mechanical- there are civil, environmental, chemical, petroleum, biomedical, materials, engineering physics, nanotech and mining engineers. 2	What's up with the lack of women in STEM? What's causing it? I'm a civil engineering student, I spend a lot of time thinking about women in STEM and the reasons for low numbers. There is definitely stereotypes surrounding engineering, and it's always been a male dominated field. It's "manly" and heavily math oriented, something women are stereotyped as being less able to do. However I also suspect that some women find engineering less appealing than other fields due to it being a more "industrial " career. 1	Existence of the Alpha Male I certainly think that alpha males exist, I simply find them annoying as all hell. I want somebody who I can relate to, not some dominant, overbearing asshat. Strong yes, intelligent yes, confident yes. I want an equal, not somebody who thinks they are superior. That being said, I'm a student in a very male dominated field, so perhaps my experiences and expectations are not the norm. I think many of TRP ideas are based on women very different from myself.
