Though the article doesn’t say, nearly half would seem to indicate pretty close to a 50/50 split. You’re extremely unlikely to get an actual 50/50 split so one sex is going to have more than the other. The problem isn’t the statistic (which is expectable), the problem is obviously the way the article chooses to portray the issue, as though female bystanders being shot is more dire than male bystanders being shot.
