Thanks for the encouragement Chuck. In your experience is the Oak/sympathy/etc issue really down to a choice not to be down on yourself/circumstances? I’ve never considered out-thinking/choosing my negative thoughts to be a thing. Only out-doing/acting - like physically doing something in response - but that’s not guaranteed.

Awesome post! I love how a lot of it has to do with taking some genuine interest in others. I have to strike up (and take the lead in) casual conversations for work pretty often. So, that's what we've been doing - we each accrue an amount each month that's free to spend no questions asked. Exaaaaaactly. I have to do this and be conscious of it myself - I would rather be reactionary and defensive. But, she makes good points because she IS your second in command. That’s to be lauded, and useful because her perspective will help you shore up your weak spots. The issue becomes when you stop judging for yourself and you consider her judgement instantly above yours. Even when she’s right and your wrong, you still need to judge for yourself and make mistakes.

The one thing that springs to my mind for you to think about is if her complaints are legitimately valid TO YOU. Caps only for emphasis. In reading through how you’re going about figuring out college and finances with your son - I’ve got to say in comparison to my upbringing you’re doing a fantastic job. Nobody encouraged me to count the cost when I was younger, so I was woefully inept at it AND afraid of it when I got older. Because we haven’t been going anywhere. I don’t have major specific criteria other than being true to the Bible and not culture first. My wife (I think) would like to stick to a church that’s in the same ELS-based group she grew up in. That limits our options to 1 unless we drive a distance. For now I’m just going to start going, make some judgements about what I want, and see where that takes me.

I forgot to edit the “going to church” bit to say that I’ve got 2 in the neighborhood I’m going to go check out and perhaps go back to one we visited a while ago - see what sticks. We will be out of the area this week, and I have to work all weekend the following. I just moved a commitment from Sunday to Saturday the 3rd week so I can go to one of the neighborhood churches.
