Have you considered doing group activities? Like joining a book club, a sports team, taking a class, etc? The easiest way to meet people is naturally through either friend groups or organized activities of some kind.

I highly recommend thinking through what he is saying. In that second, third and fourth quotes, he’s basically saying that women are an extension of men, trophies to be won and possessed by men. We should not be looking to be with people that are palatable after we change them. We should all be with people we are compatible with as they are. Can people change? Yes. But we cannot control how they change. Your bf has to want to change for himself. There’s no sign of that in what you wrote. It coul…

The pompous pontificating- how does op bear it? Even if it wasn’t manosphere ideology, she should rethink if she wants to continue conversing with someone who talks like this.

I think there is something to this. There’s a long line of how women get this kind of information on how to date, attract men, groom themselves, etc. Girls and women have long had access to this kind of information via publications like Teen magazine, Ms, InStyle and more. There are toxic aspects to those publications as well but they don’t teach that all men are bad. I think men don’t have as many formal streams of information for grooming and dating, so it’s easier for them to fall prey to tox…

If these beliefs take over your life, it will become very much a serious problem. You might believe that women don’t like men expressing their emotions. Possibly there are some women like that. But I am betting that a much larger percentage of women dislike misogynistic men who are influenced by the manosphere. Please talk with your gf. If your gf can’t handle your emotions, then you will know it won’t work out. Relationships aren’t about trying to fit yourself into a peg that you don’t fit into…

Gender roles have been changing for many decades. I am middle aged and it’s been changing the whole time I’ve existed on this planet. What’s changed is white male grievance in the US. Misogyny has always existed but the politics of white male grievance and the ubiquity of extreme opinions through the internet has synchronized into a cult-like atmosphere. Young men not getting a date is not new. Neither is it new for young women. There have always been awkward people and late bloomers- I was one …

In all honesty, after that long, any spark that might have existed has long fizzled out. Women are human beings. You need to treat them as such.

No. Someone does not control something for two people. You have control over your body. She has control to hers. Otherwise, what it’s just outright rape.

It devalues a lot of men but it also places the blame on women as being shallow. It gives some men the aspiration to control women through violent means. It gives men the message that women are depriving them.

Yeah but it’s benefiting extreme conservative movements. They can offer discontent with the way the world is changing instead of solutions that might mean better standards of living, better healthcare, a social welfare cushion, and other social programs. White men - although I acknowledge that minority men as well as women are being sucked into this - are raring for a fight to keep privileges. It might stunt their emotions, but this is in essence a fight for power. That’s why fight for reproduct…

Your marriage is not a data set but just an anecdote. It’s meaningless and not evidence of anything. I am a woman and have had guys turn me down. If I then decided to take this information and generalize this onto all romantic/sexual relationships, it would look ridiculous because it’s not pertinent in that way.

Exactly. A classic example is studying animals that have multiple partners and extrapolating from it while discounting studies of monogamous animals. The truth is that there’s all kinds of collaborative partnerships in nature. I mean, I can look at seahorses and say we are doing pregnancy wrong. Or I could look at elephants and say nature intended us to be matriarchal.

I think you should examine why you took one bad experience and extrapolated it to all women. All of us have bad experiences with people. However not all of us then shift to putting that on a specific demographic.

One of my closest friends got sucked in. I tried for a year and a half. Perhaps it’s my fault but the friendship - at least for now - is heavily damaged. It’s hard, as a woman, to listen for hours of this stuff and try to care about the person rather than the misogyny they are spewing. One exposes one’s self to a lot of toxicity. I finally got upset when it became clear that all our conversations were about his needs and he wouldn’t listen to anything I said about my life. As is common with this…

Misogyny is alway dangerous to women. When men see women as objects to control, it leads to physical abuse, sexual assault, rape, financial abuse and, at worst, femicide. I also want to point out that such behavior is self-defeating for men as well. Even if, at best, they are just “pathetic guys”, what a waste of a life that could have been spent in a more fulfilling way that contributed to society, where they were happier with themselves.

It’s really unfortunate but sounds like the brother reflected the parents’ and extended family’s values more than op. It also sounds like the father had a hand in shaping brother’s values (or lack of).

As I thought - you are indeed using the royal we in some delusional mindset, as exemplified by your latest response. So funny.

Your experiment lacks any of the basic parameters for a real scientific experiment like large datasets, control, peer review. This is just an anecdote.

Your first sentence in your initial response is “We want a man…” Who is the “we” in your sentence then? Is it the royal we?

Marriage isn’t a mark of success if you don’t want to be married. It’s really up to you to determine if you want it or not. I have a good female friend who is happily divorced. It’s unlikely she will marry again as she hasn’t bothered dating ever since the divorce, ages ago. Success isn’t dependent on a relationship but on your being content with your life.

When you say watch what a woman does, the key thing to remember is that one woman is not representative of all women. Sure, there are women who want good looking wealthy men same as there are men who want a trophy wife. A lot depends on the kind of person you want to be with. I was personally looking for someone who shared similar values, enjoys the arts, likes to travel and wants to enjoy life. I want to live reasonably okay financially but am not vested in having a big career or finding someon…

Gave her great kids? The child is not a product a man gives to a woman. A child is made by both of them. I think you are the victim of your confirmation bias.

I wonder why he tells you that you are an exception to other women, given that would invalidate RP. Could it possibly be a form of manipulation, of flattery to make you amenable to a misogynistic ideology? I spent a long time trying to talk an old friend out of the manosphere. I don’t think I managed much, in all honesty. One of the things he frequently would say in response to my points about why his thinking on women was incorrect was to insist I didn’t know because I wasn’t like other women. …

Why do you say that surveys aren’t reliable and then answer with a survey? Are you just looking for confirmation?

Women are human beings just like men. We all vary in our experiences and what we’ve done sexually. But really the value of a human being does not rest on “body count”. I hate that term with a passion. Do you think someone is better for having less sexual experience? If that’s the case, then the only logical conclusion is that none of us should ever have sex in order to be moral people. Then, no one would have sex with you. Where does this thinking get you?

Agreed. There is definitely a political component of riling up discontent in men and pulling them increasingly into the extreme right wing.

I think you’ve learned a really important lesson in life. It’s so important to focus on one’s own happiness and not let others’ happiness be a cause for discontent.

Actually, you sound a lot like my husband. Does this sound similar: he’s a listener. He generally doesn’t have strong opinions or when he does, he’s not particularly chatty about it. Not the person you asked but we met through work. We weren’t working at the same place- I went to his workplace to ask some questions related to a marketing/sales campaign. There’s definitely plenty of people looking for a relationship with a good listener because they are rare and far between. Most anyone is willin…

It’s because you’ve coupled resources and women in your mind and repeated that to yourself until you believed that women are like oil or houses. It’s not common to treat women like natural resources.

Dating is two sided. Everyone has to take risks when dating, regardless of gender. Lots of stories on Reddit by people of all genders who’ve done a lot to keep their relationships. Perhaps widen your perspective and you will see it’s a lot of time and effort for everyone.

I am actually a little surprised to hear this. I am middle aged and I recall some of my friends getting divorced in my thirties. Then, they would go on a series of dates and some times hook up. Are you dating divorced women as well or only those who have never been married? If you just want to experiment sexually, it might mean being open to dating a wide range of women.

It should frighten you because if you take a traditional homemaker role in a potential marriage with him, your work in those years would be completely invalidated. Additionally, those years away from the workforce would mean no experience to help get a job. While I think every woman has the right to a choice in working or being a SAHM, I also think women should think carefully about their financial independence. I have a male friend who delved deeply into the manosphere after his relationship wi…

You don’t deserve that. Nobody deserves that. Remember that those hurtful things are not about you. It’s about people who are so insecure they have to get off on hurting others.
