While I'm obviously not a fan of the sentence, one of the biggest factors here was that the child's dad defended the woman. In fact, he himself had had sex with her. In many cases, the victim or victims family often plays a role in setencing. Impact statements, emotional trauma relating to a crime and other factors can all increase or reduce a sentence. I'm not an expert, but to me the simplest explanation for this is opportunity. Mother's still spend more time with their kids on a day-to-day basis when it comes to caregiving. This is because, as stats show, when it comes to two-parent households, the male is the one who works longer hours.
