However, we must admit that Men's only clubs had a reputation of being glorified brothels for the fancy rich... Not really a mates only pub to watch a soccer game... EDIT: considering the downvotes, allow me to back up my claim, with a simple wikipedia page: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentlemen%27s_club I am not claiming your grandfather's was such a sort of Gentlemen's club, but you cannot deny the cultural connotation it has/had in perhaps other parts of the world.

Allow me just point out that power through violence or physical force is not always a bad thing, but it depends on your environment. Admittedly, I see little point in that being important in modern day western countries, but perhaps this wouldn't be the best situation for several other nations/countries in the world.
