I think this is where we part ways. All the data we have concerning sexual assault in the 1950s suggests that there were certainly a large number of women being raped, but they were unlikely to report it, frequently classifying it as a "bad date" or an unfortunate experience. I just don't think you're correct about clubbing, one night stands et al. increasing the number of women being raped. Statistically speaking, the most dangerous thing I can do, rape wise, is be alone with a man I trust. I agree that more women actively pursue sex and that certainly creates new kinds of dangerous situations, but there have also been huge strides, culturally speaking, in acknowledging and addressing sexual violence-especially outside the realm of stranger rape.

Actual women, are, however, afraid to come forward because they're afraid of being called sluts or accused of making it up. It happens all the time. It doesn't excuse false accusations, but people are right that it's hard for victims to come forward, and it gets harder with every person whose kneejerk reaction to an accusation of sexual assault or rape is "liar".

Dude, do you seriously think women weren't raped before women's lib? It's been a part of human history for as long as we have records of laws. It's not as though staying at home helped when your "protectors" were the ones doing the abusing or a war broke out.

Participating in rape culture is totally different from being a rapist, though. And it's generally acknowledged that both men and women contribute to it. It's not the idea that all men are rapists, it's the idea that we live in a culture where the moral responsibility for rape is frequently shifted to the victim (ie, she was asking for it, she acts like such a slut, what did she expect, she should have watched her drink more carefully) and rape is both normalized and trivialized.
