Nicole Ryan wasn't acquitted. In fact, the Supreme Court of Canada overturned her acquittal by the Appeals court, and said that her argument of "duress" didn't meet the requirements. They ordered a "stay of proceedings" so that she wouldn't face trial again. She wasn't found innocent or guilty, but she did go free with no criminal record. "When the custodial rights of parents are questioned I assume someone's looking for trouble" --> well the whole point of social services and children's advocacy groups is to protect the most vulnerable of society. Abuse comes in many formats, and parents don't own their children and can't do whatever they want with them. If a child is truly in danger, and the parents are not doing anything about it, I would advocate removing the child from the situation.

I followed this link out of curiosity. Now that i've read quite a few stories listed in the index I have to admit I was appalled at the level of crazy in them. I asked my husband if he would take a birth control pill for men, and he said that he doesn't want to pump his body full of hormones either. But he would try for the short term, if such a thing became available. Both of us are looking for a more permanent solution, but doctors are very leery with sterilization for people under 30. I don't understand - do a lot of people change their minds once they feel the cold hand of death start to caress the back of their necks?

I'm not a member of either subreddit, but I would be glad if my husband got a vasectomy. Taking birth control pills for the rest of my life scares me, as I don't know what long term use of the hormones will do to my body. However, our family doctor won't agree to it. He is asking us to wait until we are in our mid thirties in case we change our minds and suddenly want children. My husband can't get it done unless he gets a referral, so we're stuck for the moment.

You realize that he never mentioned his sexual abuse to his therapists for fear that they would tell others. I'm not saying therapy solves every problem, but it does help a lot of people. But good therapists can't work with half of the information. The sexual abuse came to define him, it was creating havoc in his every day life. If he couldn't talk about the single biggest issue in his life with anyone, regardless of therapist status, he's not going to get any help from anywhere.

Except he didn't trust that his abuse would stay secret, so he never talked about it with anyone. Not even the therapists that he did see. He never really did get help for his core issues, because he didn't want anyone to know. He shouldn't have had to feel shame for being a victim.

Imagine if her complaint was that she consented to sex with a person who she thought was white, and later found out was part black. After I read this article, I felt like this author had serious issues with control. I wonder if given background info on how this woman acted within the marriage and her daily life, she would be labeled as a control freak? It also seems she began to view her husband as property, and she had papers to prove ownership. I agree with your assessment. However, that doesn't mean the Taliban wasn't a brutal regime that went to extremes to oppress women. But this is just one regime that does this.
