Brother, I could've written this myself. I'll just add that when you're going through it and people say things like, "it gets better with time," etc... I am learning that this saying is actually true. It used to almost piss me off hearing that, as it sounds so cliche, but it's a cliche for a reason. This is an opportunity to really look at yourself, your life, and so on, and make some independent decisions as to how you want to spend the rest of the limited time we all have. This is fantastic advice. Adding to Step 2, do not directly negotiate or discuss anything having to do with custody, splitting assets, etc... Create a firm boundary there, and only discuss the day to day things that need to be done (e.g., the immediate needs of the kids, household, etc...). For example, I know when my ex eventually pairs up with someone, there's a part of me that will be really bummed out. I am preparing for this. On a smaller level, when she sends me a shitty text, it's going to annoy me. The key is, IMHO, is to reco…

Great post. We just finalized our divorce (26 years, 2 adult, 1 school age kid). The financial aspect sucks but I know I'll be fine in the long run. For me, it's all the things you listed. To all the dudes reading this, let me be one more person who will reinforce the idea that things do get better. I'm not 100% out of the woods, but compared to a month ago, I'm way better. You have to have a support system. This forum is nice, but spend time with good friends, find a solid therapist (easier sai…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
