The mistake you're making is in assuming to only look at one cue. That certainly isn't what the commenter is getting at. It's just one of many signs, and one of the more overt ways people express comfort and interest.

Both make good points. But I'd lean more towards what OP is saying because a lot of us start off extremely needy. Maybe what he says is extreme, but sometimes that's what clicks for guys who are used to being doormats. There's a balance, like you say, and it definitely requires being sensitive to the situation. As with all things, practice and seduce.
