Women tend to be socialized differently. If you’re raised paranoid, you take fewer risks. If you take fewer risks, you’re less likely to be a victim of crime of opportunity. Where I live, young guys are robbing middle aged women in broad daylight. Clearly, they’re just an easier target than trying to rob a guy who is 6ft. When men do get robbed in broad daylight, it’s at gunpoint.

The problem with that example is that white people will go to extremes to avoid being the only white person in a room. White people in America don’t want to send their kids to schools where most students are Asian even if that’s the best school. They will seek out mediocre schools so that their kids can be in the majority. White people will also pay more to live in neighborhoods that are 70% or more white even if those neighborhoods are inferior.

That’s not always true. Women face harsher penalties for harming children, and for threatening or attacking or murdering their husband/boyfriends. You even have women serving longer sentences for “failing to protect” their kids from abuse than they boyfriend gets for abusing those kids. And teen girls spend longer in juvie for less serious crimes, like running away from home because they don’t get the boys will be boys lens applied to them.

Are they though? Because women aren’t out there assaulting themselves and there are far more women being raped and assaulted by men than vice versa. Are 13 year old boys being flashed on the bus? Are drunk frat boys being raped by sorority girls? And if not, why? Why are middle aged married men up-skirting middle school girls? I’m not sure what the patriarchy means, but the prevalence of all these behaviors and lack of consequences suggests we’re all collectively ok with it.

I dunno, when I was in college a lot of gay men did things that straight men didn’t: they grabbed women, groped women. There was a real breast infatuation. And when the women complained, the guys would laugh and say relax, I’m gay. So when you’re examining problematic sexual behaviors towards women, this is not only about straight men. Being less predatory than the crazy rapist doesn’t give gay men a get out jail free card.

I think there are many issues at play. One is that sexual violence is on a spectrum. You have rape which is an extreme. Then you have groping, up-skirting, flashing or even non consensual strangling during consensual sex. You even guys who like to quasi stalk women to freak them out and get off on the fear. All of those things are deeply traumatic for women, especially since the up-skirting, flashing and groping starts when girls turn 11. When guys don’t shun/shame/condemn all of these behaviors…

This is a step in the right direction, but since 1% of rapes end up with a conviction, this doesn’t change much for most women. The rapists can go to court, say she consented, not get convicted and then proceed to request custody.

32 states allow women who have children conceived through rape to request that the man’s parental rights be terminated.
