Yes but the intimidation factor is more present for women and to some extent it's a problem of society. We're still teaching gender roles, if subconsciously or subtly. I'm not a fan of affirmative action in general (and this falls under this category in a VERY broad sense) but I'll admit that it is helpful in some instances as long as you're not teaching or reinforcing the already present inequality. But which is more damaging? An incubator of sorts or an environment that, at least at present, seems overtly hostile to female players especially at the competitive level? The article was a woman saying that women only tournaments were a good thing. Not that they created feelings of inadequacy.

With anything like this you need to look at the environment and ask if the women's only tournaments have a useful and distinct purpose. Since poker is definitely a male dominated area and there's still a perception that it's a man's area of the world then yes they do have a purpose. Suggestion: Talk to her manager sometime when she's not there and ask if you can work something out so you can avoid getting sued or in legal trouble. If there's a record, even a verbal one between you and her manager, that you didn't intend to stalk her and just wanted to shop in peace then you've got a leg up if she goes batshit on you.
