We're still teaching gender roles, if subconsciously or subtly. I'm not a fan of affirmative action in general (and this falls under this category in a VERY broad sense) but I'll admit that it is helpful in some instances as long as you're not teaching or reinforcing the already present inequality. Since poker is definitely a male dominated area and there's still a perception that it's a man's area of the world then yes they do have a purpose.
