Can’t upvote this enough. Stbxw wanted a amicable split before she moved out. 2 months later she filed (she asked for divorce) with the largest law office in town and told me I didn’t need to get a lawyer. Told me she “wanted it to be fair”, first draft of settlement agreement showed her lawyer asked for 70% of our net worth. Things have gotten ugly, now have evidence she had a “exit plan”. Check your state laws about divorce and infidelity. In my state, there is no such thing a legal separation so we are married until a judge says so even though we haven’t lived together since February. Infidelity does not matter unless you can provide absolute proof of intercourse. If you can prove infidelity there is a good chance the cheating spouse will be required to pay your legal fees.

Wow this hit me where it hurts. This describes where I think my stbxw is pretty accurately, even though she won’t talk to me about anything related to our relationship. I’m so frustrated that she kept so much from me emotionally and just wish she would have used her time in therapy to figure out how to talk to me rather than how to move on from me.

Do not get a free legal consultation, lawyers charge $250-500/hr. Any lawyer willing to give up that revenue is probably desperate or not worth what they charge.
