You’ve evidenced that you’re more interested in arguing with me than whether or not this sub is full of sexist dog whistling.

This sub has a lot of sexism to men and women mixed in with legitimate concerns. Other subs like /r/mensliberation have part of the answer as well.

If you're fighting for equal rights between men and women, that makes you a Feminist. I’m a MRA feminist egalitarian.

Yeah OP is smoking something. Ripley has super (traditionally) masculine traits, she’s all about breaking bullshit gender roles to fuck up Aliens, whilst retaining other more feminine traits like motherhood.

Case in point, feminism isn’t about sexism. My feminism anyway.

I don’t like negative prejudicial statements about any group of people to be honest. Sometimes it’s got a place though, for example in observational comedy as a societal critique. I think it’s important to distinguish in this discussion between criticism of certain masculine behaviours, some of which are quite common and widespread, and criticism of men point blank. The latter does piss me off, but for me it’s not about that at the end of the day, it’s about defining a type of masculinity which …

Depends what you mean by feminist. If you mean misandrist rather than the perfectly reasonable egalitarians (which do exist) then I’m with you.

Source on the mod thing? This recent upvoted thread is dedicated to trying to change the definition of rape in the UK to include men, so would seem to contradict that assertion... Only a tiny subset of supposed feminists are misandrists. I'm a feminist, and a guy, and pro mens rights and mens liberation. I know a load of feminists who aren't misandrists. Splitting off into tribes and demonising people cuts both ways.

What are you basing that on? The MensLib subreddit literally says you don't have to wholeheartedly agree with feminism, and are open to criticising feminism. https://www.reddit.com/r/MensLib/wiki/meta/profeminist

Fair enough, this has been an interesting exchange, thanks for challenging me. I still don't think this transphobia is compatible long-term with modern feminism and egalitarianism more broadly, but get how it can be considered an offshoot of feminism...
/r/MensRights24/08/21 02:09 PM

Not recognising that trans women are women is a form of transphobia though, because it asserts that sex is the same thing as gender, and ignores the individual's right to choose. So lumping in trans women with all men and the patriarchy is transphobic. Also, opposing the patriarchy isn't the same as misandry my dude. It's broadly just the belief that women and men should be equally represented in positions of power and have equal say over our laws. Man-hating is a retarded cul-de-sac of "feminis…

They actually are perfectly compatible; you've just defined away feminists who are transphobes. It's a "no true Scotsman" argument. You can use "no true Scotsman" any time actually defining the tenets of a movement or ideology comes into friction with reality, and people who misconstrue that movement's core values yet claim to still be a part of it. As far as I'm concerned, feminism is about gender equality, egalitarianism and all womens' issues. That's not compatible with discriminating against…

A TERF is a transphobe. Transphobia and Feminism aren't compatible any more than misogyny and Feminism are compatible, TERF shouldn't even be a term, it's basically just a slur. There aren't self-identifying TERFs running around. Granted my original comment wasn't responding to the entire chain.

Because there are only two sides to every conversation on this sub and I didn't jump on the bandwagon. People just want to get back to the ol' reliable circlejerk - hating on feminists - no matter whether or not it's remotely relevant to the actual conversation or thread.
/r/MensRights24/08/21 12:36 PM

Yes, that’s what TERF stands for, but in the context of OP and this comment chain, which says: Would make more sense if it said TERFs. It would actually make more sense just to say “Transphobe”. TERFs have nothing to do with any of this, why bring them into it, other than to bitch about “radical” feminists? They’re just a flavour of transphobe.

I feel that whatever a person is attracted to, if everyone is of age, and consenting, it's nobody's business. Guy likes girly girls? Go you! Guy likes fembois? Go you! Girl likes butch girls? Go you! It ain't nobody's business but those involved as long as everyone's consenting and of legal age. Goes to show how much feminists and MRAs actually have in common, contrary to the stupid groupthink gatekeeping bullshit that goes on.

AKA just transphobes. Edit: By which I mean, TERF is a rubbish term which obscures transphobia and paints Feminists with it.

you want it to be socially acceptable to treat men with less respect than women. No I don’t. You don't believe in gender equality. You believe in feminism. Those are two very different things. No they aren’t, I believe in gender equality and am a feminist and an egalitarian.

Flipping the script ignores the context in which we live. There’s a reason putting on blackface is different to clown makeup, for example. Just swapping the genders on any given topic is simplistic and avoids how nuanced and complicated issues are. I don’t need to be told to call out misandry, I do it every time I see it. I believe in gender equality, and feminism is part of that.

Marxist Feminist Critical Theory is about this intersection of class and gender issues. Most important, these True Feminists never seem to speak up in defence of men. Every time I've discussed #KillAllMen, #MenAreTrash and other forms of hate speech with a feminist, they've always defended them. This is wack, and just illustrative of how polarised online spaces are to be honest. My feminist friends wouldn't justify that shit in a million years. I don't think feminism hurts men, I think it's help…

By that logic, all men interested in Mens' Rights are incel misogynists. Taking one part of an enormous spectrum of opinion as representative of all people who claim to care about equality for women - and then using that to justify prejudice - is lazy and ignorant.

The people on this sub have a really warped idea of what feminism is. It's part of egalitarianism. I am pro mens rights and a feminist. The amount of misogyny masquerading as "mens rights" is really sad. This sub has got so many posts dedicated to shitting on women and feminism. Feminists are not misandrists, I'm friends with enough in the real world (and not on online echo chambers) to know.

I agree with so much of what you’ve said, except for the statement that feminism is class blind. Feminism’s a huge movement, there are branches of it which are more focused on class and more open to discussing mens’ issues. Intersectionality means we can look at gender, class, race and other stuff as combined systems of oppression, rather than just taking one lens to everything. That means me as a white guy giving a shit about stuff which doesn’t affect me directly, but I also expect the same fr…

It’s a song about female empowerment in the context of patriarchal society. Swapping the genders would only make sense if we lived in a centuries-old matriarchy. This is a reality-check post for this echo chamber sub, I don’t expect civil responses.

You’ve got a pretty warped perspective on what feminism is. Why don’t you ask your female relatives what they think about gender equality?

You sound really unhappy man. I’m not going to sit here and take your abuse just because you’re offended by the idea of men not being self-serving individualists. If you’re able to be a kind, caring and loving person, people will see that and reciprocate. This lone wolf nonsense is how we get incels and school shooters.
/r/MensRights15/08/21 03:32 PM

Yep. It’s a complicated topic, masculinity has positive and negative stuff baked into it, and there are some types of masculinity that are better than others.
/r/MensRights15/08/21 03:30 PM

I’d disagree that masculinity is a solely individualistic thing. I’d argue it’s shaped by society and the media we consume, so thinking about that - alongside your own personal definition - might be helpful and rewarding. Personally I do think feminism should also serve men, and women should take an interest in conversations about masculinity. It’s part of why men don’t feel like it has nothing to do with them.

I see where you’re coming from. I’m a guy, but I’ve got women and gay friends, so maybe my perspective is a bit different. You do matter. That queer / woke / SJW stuff hasn’t done enough to include men’s voices in the debate, but also men have to be up for and willing to engage with it. I understand how it feels like it has nothing to do with you but it does, it’s supposed to be about equality for everyone.
/r/MensRights15/08/21 01:27 PM

by the same logic feminism should also accept that men have the right to be men too? Feminism (and I mean normal mainstream Feminism, not the insane fringe kinds) hasn't got a problem with men being men. I guess the question here is what we mean by men being men? what about the feminism echo chamber? how is that any different at all? There are toxic echo chambers of women online, for sure. There are types of "feminists" who're transphobic, and I don't doubt there are some which are misandristic.…

I agree! This sub's got a very particular perspective though, which doesn't reflect the breadth of opinion out there, even among men.
/r/MensRights15/08/21 12:27 PM

Why should masculinity be compatible with feminism, queer rights or racial equality? Why should it not? Intersectionality is really useful in helping us to collectively overcome the problems we face as a society. For example, to think about masculinity in isolation from other genders is to miss how its been constructed directly in relation (or sometimes opposition) to them. Shouldn’t masculinity be something that is decided by men Yes absolutely. each man should have their own definition of masc…

That's a terribly convenient way of absolving yourself of having to learn anything about racial equality, queer rights and feminism. These things do inform my perspective on masculinity, and an understanding of them and how they're closely related to one another enables me to see the challenges men face in a more helpful light.
/r/MensRights15/08/21 12:20 PM

I'm a feminist and don't think masculinity is always the problem. It's up to us as men to define intersectional masculinity that is compatible with feminism, queer rights and racial equality. That means getting out of echo chambers like this sub and taking some responsibility for how you feel.

I think they do see it. The issue is, how do you constructively respond? Labour is a multicultural movement. It heavily relies on the vote of minority ethnic communities in cities, so it can’t risk being seen as racist or anti-immigration. And to some extent the racial concerns of the white working class are being stoked up by the right-wing press, who incidentally are also Tory donors. This isn’t to say I think immigration is an unequivocally good thing, or that it hasn’t - in some places - neg…

What’re working class people feeling threatened by? Agree it feels like there’s a big disconnect, but I wouldn’t lay all the blame for that at Labour’s door.

I somewhat understand the nuclear family point as I think kids need good secure attachments and loving relationships to model. That doesn’t have to be a 1950s “one man, one woman” setup. It could even be a single parent, if they’ve got support from relatives. But in any case I do agree a loving, safe and stable home is really important for kids. Speaking as an outside observer, the American policing and justice system is pretty damn racist though 😂 As to whether there’re cultural issues in black…

You should’ve gone to Specsavers mate. That’s such a crazy thing to claim, I’m not at all ok with stigmatising men. I really think it’s important not to go too far down the rabbit hole with echo chamber subs like this, you end up developing a real “us and them” mentality. I’m here because I care about men’s issues, but I know I’m not the only person with problems.

That’s funny, I thought I just acknowledged the problem. Thanks for the insult and the prejudice though 🤷‍♂️

As a progressive, I understand the difference. However I don’t think it should be used to justify prejudice or racism, which it often is. The roots of this stuff are complex and cultural and systemic. It’s not that black people are naturally more prone to being violent criminals. I understand that there’s also a frustration with the Left at “ignoring” these issues, but I think it’s partly that those who’re engaged with this discussion on a daily basis have moved on from these headline stats. The…
