I turned it into music. It's real easy to be macho about it and pretend that it isn't happening or like you are fine, but there's no simple solution. I just tried to channel it as best I could and push myself to move on with my actions until my sleeping mind caught up. I recommended therapy. It didn't really do it for me, but it helps a lot of people, so that is always an option. Don't beat yourself up about it, though. It's a normal human reaction. After getting out of a five year relationship it took me months to really get my confidence back. I had a lot of nightmares as well, but basically I just kept busy and time healed a lot of the wounds. I feel for you.

The nightmares go with time. A therapist can help. Send time with friends. Have a few drinks or a smoke, but that is only temporary relief. It doesn't fix it. Forcing yourself to be social actually goes a long way.

Acting confident and see the resulting reactions will over time build the confidence you need. It's like building any other habit. You have to do it consciously for a while before you do it automatically.
