Reading this makes me sad. But you're right. I feel that too.

The other part of this story is that I was planning to start my life in a new city after finishing my current graduate degree. For financial reasons, I had to move back to this city to live continue living with my (toxic) family and that's when I met him. I had been clear about my future plans with him from the start. My love for him grew so much that I had considered staying in this city so that I could be with him. From my knowledge, neither of them cheated. I like that you understand the impo…

Thanks so much. She is definitely a HCBM and he is spineless with her. They're gonna be intertwined forever. I don't want to be a part of that. I think I am loud and clear. I love him, but. I'll do some reading on r/stepparents to gain more knowledge and perspectives. Probably need it to work through my grief.

You're right. I've spent my entire 20s trying to heal from my childhood and adolescence trauma and grow so that I could be a good mom to my future kids. Having kids with this man would defeat everything I've done and avoided.

Thanks for painting that picture. I grew up in a high-conflict family and I don't want to continue zenning and accepting how it is. I don't know how to get her side of the story.

also, sorry I need to clarify. They're still legally married. Just "separated" for 1.5 years.

He said they grew apart and she started becoming resentful because he was working too much after he became a lawyer (he started law school at 28 right after their wedding), and she complained that he didn't do enough of the household chores.

Mmm hmm. " this marriage is not over until it's over. " — is this simply their legal divorce you're referring to? or do we mean his relationship with his wife even if they do finally divorce?

You are right. He is going through something. He needs time to figure that out himself. It's unfortunate because we are very compatible and we do love each other. But I guess not enough. If we're meant to be, we could be in the future. But not now.

He tells me that he no way wants to ever be back with her. He said that she told him recently that she's glad they're no longer together. But other than that, I feel like they're still together....perhaps not sexually and romantically, but I just don't think you can truly break apart from someone you've been with for 20 years, who you've spent your entire 20s and more than half of your 30s with, and who you share a biological child with and co-parent. u/jenna_grows You are indeed right tha the i…

I can only say that I think it is a horrible decision for them to decide to have a kid together while they were having relationship issues. (He thought they could work through all problems and continue to be together; she was 35yo and really wanted to be a mom, according to him). I don't want to deal with people who would make such decisions, for the rest of my life.

Aw thank you, u/VasiliyZaitzev! Yes, those are some reasons I love him for. I like how he tried to save his marriage (talking to his wife, getting her to go to couple therapy). And he definitely tried to learn and grow from the experience (like knowing what his life goals and relationship needs are, and what he brings into a relationship, and why his marriage broke down). This is what I attracted me to think that his man is worth dating.

Funny how I thought it was good that he has had a chance to date other people before he met me, but never until now thought that he needs time to be single and not dating (which I think includes not going on dates and hooking up with people). He and his wife got together when they were around 21yo, did long distance for two years, and then when he was 23, he moved out from living with his family to living with her. They've been living together ever since. He really has never lived on his own bef…

I agree with you. It sounded really good when he saying to me that he likes to be in relationships and he isn't afraid of commitment. 6 months after separating from his wife, he asked someone to be his girlfriend. They were "kinda" together for a few months but she dashed and it ended badly with him getting high on weed for a night,

Right. Sorry I didn't make it clear in my original post — he's not actually his ex-wife because they are still legally married. They started with a "trial" separation in Oct 2021 and then he realized he's happier without the negativity from her. They've been living in separate apartments ever since. But they only live one block apart because he said it's more convenient for their co-parenting. Interestingly I'm starting to get a picture in my head of the ancient Chinese families where the man ha…

Thank you for your detailed, kind, and helpful response! How do you think I can approach to talking to his wife? I thought I had been taking dating this man slowly and I thought I had been careful to not rush things to avoid trapping myself with someone due to my need to feel safe and loved. But I am not sure anymore. It's interesting because on the one hand it seems like his wife and he has no interest in ever getting back together, but on the other hand, I feel that they are still so significa…

Definitely second-hand smoke and it's more harmful than smoking it myself. He wants to keep me because I fulfill his "relationship needs." I've heard that men like to "comparmentalize." While he is happy that I fulfill his sexual, emotional, and companionate needs, he doesn't fulfill my need to have a partner who I can have completely to myself. I don't want my future children to be competing for their father. U

I had to take a deep breath after I read this. You have good insights. Yeah, he said "there is no baby mama drama." Interesting how I had thought that it was good enough that he's had a year and a half between first separating and meeting me, that it is enough to know that he is ready for me. "A relationship serious enough for marriage discussions" — are you referring to the relationship with me? He's saying his "I love yous" and that he thinks I'm the right one. I feel like a side chick? We have been exclusive for over a month. He has introduced me to some of his friends and co-workers as his girlfriend. He tells me that he loves me and I can feel that he does, through feelings and his actions. Thanks for understanding how I feel. I met her briefly at their friend group pub night. She's always in his life in a close way, like he said she is a platonic friend he is not sexually attracted to. But to me, it's not just about sex. Maybe I am just not okay with dating someone who has a close female friend who also hangs out with his family and one-on-one with him. I don't like that she always reaches out to him when her boyfriend isn't there for her. I think she should find someone else, not my boyfriend. That's how I feel and …

You're right — the jealousy I feel because of the female platonic friend is definitely the true overarching topic. I need to ask myself whether I'm ok with being in a relationship with someone with a close female platonic friend. Some people are okay with that, some aren't. Everyone's choice is valid.

Honestly, he could just tell the kid that I've moved away to a far away place. If a friend (or romantic partner) died or moved away, you'd have to explain it to the kid, no? That being said, your perspective is entirely valid and I appreciate it! Thank you for your words of caution. It is important for me to reflect on it.

You're not wrong. The overarching topic of discussion here is really dating a parent. I'd like to point out though that my boyfriend is not a single parent, he is co-parenting with the kid's mother. I guess what I think is that meeting the kid is important because it is also helps to know whether the relationship is worth investing in for both parties involved. You wouldn't want to spend 12 months of your life dating someone with the intent of a life-long partnership only to realize then that th…

Marriage, as you say, is a legal bind. Common-law is the same thing -- as it is also a legal arrangement. What I'm worried about is you having kids with a man who is afraid of commitment. The issue is not marriage or common-law. The issue is the faith and promise you have in a relationship with each other.

Have to have conversations about what it means to be equally contributing. How does doing housework and taking care of husband and kids equal to the income that husband brings in? We have to start looking at housework as being equivalent to income from external work.

Cancel the wedding. He didn't have a "big mindset switch." It's the part of him that he's kept hidden for years between breaking up with her and meeting you. People say, "never stay with a guy who calls his ex crazy." This just might be a real life example you have here. It appears that he hasn't gotten over the hurt that he endured when the ex broke up with him. It's also a good idea to figure out why the ex broke up with him. If I were you, I would try to reach out to the ex to ask her. He lik…

Cut him off. "Bear in mind I have expressed I liked something more serious, but he was still willing to meet up." These a**holes don't care if you want serious or not. They want you, they get you, they hurt you, they dump you. Then they tell you you signed up for it. I've been there before. Many of us have been there before. Don't go there.

Unfair. You don't sound happy. He sounds like a selfish brat. Let him be in his mess and let him realize how lucky he has been to live in a upper-class wealthy family and then to have his girlfriend (YOU) take care of him and his messes. I'm not telling you to break up with him, but I don't want you to have a selfish husband and your kids to have a selfish father.

Pay for YOUR OWN shopping. Never pay for the guy's own things. I don't want you to get taken advantage of. Even though my boyfriend pays for our dates, there are things that I'd wish he'd do but he doesn't. And like you, I don't want to force it on him. I know it feels horrible when we don't feel that our loved ones love us enough. It's a struggle. I don't have a magic solution either.

Have you discussed with him about WHY he believes in 50/50? My boyfriend isn't perfect, but for the few months we've been dating, he's paid for my shares of our meals out. It does feel nice to have him do that because I feel his generosity and care for me. When I bring up how I feel bad about him paying for our dates, he says to me, "I'm paying for OUR dates." That being said, I do more of the driving than he does. Roughly 65/35. And I pay for little snacks as a gesture sometimes. It's also impo…

You're right. His girlfriend is his "trophy" -- the object that he uses to gain himself status. If you hang out with him, he will probably lure you into sex and you will get attached. He'll want to keep seeing you, but he'll never make you his girlfriend. He doesn't love you. He doesn't love his girlfriend. He only loves himself. He hurts people and say that they are responsible for their own feelings. He's a loser. People like that should end up in hell.

Absolutely not. Medications help restore your brain chemicals to your baseline levels so that you proceed with your daily functions and be able to achieve a decent quality of life. I would caution against your finance though. It's really not that big of a deal. Seems like he's made something simple into something stressful. Look at you now trying to make up for the 'mistake(?)' by thinking of what to do. Continue going out with this man if you like, but monitor the dynamics between you two. A good relationship shouldn't be stressful. You should be able to easily solve stressors together.

Seems like there is sexual disconnect between you two. It's frustrating to have a high sex drive but the partner is unable/unwillinging to match up/compromise. “we are just not having sex, so we won’t fight about it” His answer doesn't satisfy me. I agree with you that it might be prolonging the problem. However, I would take a chance and see how he does with no sex with you for a month. That may make him desire you sexually more. Sounds like you've tried your best with regular waxing and shaving. It's pretty annoying when they bring exciting suggestions up and seem like they really mean it but it turns out to be jokes/expressions/never-come-trues. Great if you can break it off. What about you attracted him in the first place? Start by letting him know if he is reaching/missed an exit or if his food is burning in the oven. Doing so isn't aggressive/pushy/bossy. Don't be afraid to say something that you think is right.

This hurts. Your social media account means tremendously to you. A year's efforts (and time, money, etc), filled with memories of you and him. How could he just let go of all of that for another girl. Remember, you're significant. Don't let him make you feel small. I know it's hard and it hurts, but remember, love yourself.

Go on dates with new people! This sounds strange. Don't know why he did what he did. Just be your own individual and see what he does. But don't try to hang onto him. If he really wants you, he'll come crawling back at you. And only at you. No one else. My ex tried getting me to be his side lover while he has an official gf whom he loves and respects. Don't be that side piece. Love yourself and one day you'll go 'wtf. Who tf was he?'

Asides from this issue, are there other things about this person or the relationship that bothers you? It sounds like this issue is starting to bother you because you are always the one to make spending time together happen and you feel like initiating dates is something he (male) should be doing too. I've had these convos with him before and time and time again, he persuades me to stay with him. To give the relationship a chance. If he isn't interested in me, why does he want me to stay with him?

If he isn't interested in me, why does he want to spend time with me and text me throughout the day?

He seems to care about and respect me in other ways. Like he wants to make me happy. With the least effort as possible.

He listens to me talk about my family issues and problems at my job, comforts me and gives me advice. But not much beyond that. When I asked him what would happen if I have to go to a school across the country, he said we could do long-distance. He said he wants to go as far as he can with our relationship. It doesn't seem like he wants to end our relationship anytime soon. I'm confused.

He'd listen to me talk about my family issues and interpersonal problems at my job and he gives me advice and comforts me. But beyond that, he doesn't really take an interest in learning about my interests. Like I'd tell him I love yoga but he wouldn't go on to chatting to me about it or asking me more about it. I kinda want a boyfriend who wants to know why I love yoga, for example. I want him to talk to me about my passion for helping people, for example. But nope. None. I'm confused.

I didnt see the comment that got removed but thank you for your supportive words. You're right. Hr doesnt care about a lot of the things I say. It's like he picks a few things to remember and uses those to make me think he is really devoted to me. I'm not an all-talk-no-do kind of person. But he is. Like 90% of the time.

That's what I think too! But it does also seem like he cares about me and likes seeing me happy.

I have voiced my concerns. About the issue on this post. About many other issues. Like how he doesn't like making set plans with me. Like how he makes me wait around not knowing if we're meeting up. Like how he doesn't like committing to meet at a specific time. Like how he hides me from his family and doesn't want me to meet his friends. I don't want to change him. What's the point of that? But should I be telling him what I need in the relationship? Like telling him that I want him to drive mo…

Usually about them in relation to his friends. Like their jobs, their heights, their families, their relationships.

Outside of this issue are things like how I'm non-existent to his friends and family and how he prefers not to make set date plans with me and he tries to explain his behaviours and his stories don't make logical sense. He's a nice guy. He's generous, polite, respectful towards others. That's what drew me to him.

Engaging convos? Hardly. He doesn't like it when I ask about the future. He doesn't like it when I bring up serious topics.

We both carry the conversation. He gets excited telling me about his buddies and their wives and their girlfriends. That's his fav thing to talk about.

I'm 27. He's 30. Dating for 4 months. I've talked to him about not liking my dead-end job and that I want to go back to school. He doesn't ask me to elaborate. I told him I'm I decided not to apply to a program that I've been working on an application for. He said "better to find out now than later." And that's it. I want him to ask me why not. I later told him that I what I really want is to do medical school. He says "wow!" That's it. Doesn't ask me why. I want him to be interested in my hopes…

Tell him that what he says makes you feel bad. Tell him you don't like it. Tell him it's not funny. My bf thought teasing me was a fun, loving thing to do. I told him that I don't like that he is making fun of my appearance. He stopped.

If you want to be a dermatologist, be a dermatologist. You can be a dermatologist in private practice and limit your hours. You can work part-time in dermatology. Be a nurse if you're truly passionate about being a nurse. Nursing and medicine are two vastly different professions even though they have some overlap. Nurses still work really long, hard hours. You are VERY young and you have this beautiful dream of becoming a dermatologist. Go for it! Don't waste your life trying to pursue something…
