He refused to provide for a ceremony that went against the teachings of his religion. He did not deny them just any cake he denied them his labor for a specific ceremony. If they walked in and said "hey ide like this cake oh btw we're gay" he would have sold them the cake. This couple specifically searched for a baker who would stick to their Christian values for the sole purpose of bullying the bakery into going against those values.
