This comes from the Margret Atwood quote “men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them”. It wasn’t never meant as a factual statistic, rather a comment on society by an author whose work is inspired by this topic. In terms of data, I’d say femicide stats back it up. Women are killed by men at an extremely high rate globally and the same issue does not exist at a comparable scale when reversed.

White, modern feminism can also be so embarrassing when compared to the struggles of women in other parts of the world. I’ve seen comment sections with women from non-western countries talking about how ridiculous white feminist agendas are. They compare issues in their counties like girls not being able to access education or forced marriages, or FGM with white feminists crying because a man called them “sweetheart”

I’d disagree, the core value of feminism is gender equality, which drives the two criteria you mention. Technically, true feminists should care about inequalities and injustices for both men and women but the ideology has become very warped. It’s branched off into lots of different subcategories, some more extreme than others and hostile views have become more mainstream.

Unfortunately false rumors of any kind do tend to cause a level of gossip/reputational damage that’s hard to correct. For example, I moved to a new city as soon as I left school and then moved back to my home town at 31. My biggest shock moving back was that a lot of silly rumours about myself from when I was at school were still very much alive in the community 15 years later. I’ve learnt that rumours within communities are very difficult to “debunk” and the harder you try and set the record st…

💯 There’s a reason kids are taught “stranger danger” from a young age.

Your point about fathers speaking ill of men is so important! So many girls are raised with negative messaging about boys from over protective fathers who hate the idea of their daughters being sexualised. Yes, these fathers are trying to do the right thing by telling their teen daughters to stay away from boys because “they only want one thing”. But acting as if they’ll kill any boy that tries to date their daughter and intimidating any boy she brings home, damages her perception of boys/men fr…

Unfortunately there 100% is a large biological aspect at play. The fear of unknown males is an evolutionary survival mechanism and how females (across the entire animal kingdom) keep themselves and their offspring alive. It doesn’t make it right but it is inherent. The rise in women consuming media such as True Crime doesn’t help the situation. I think your observation about the pandemic is also accurate. The isolation has changed society. We’ve seen a huge reduction in social skills (especially…

💯the minute you stop caring about what others think and start practicing self care by focusing on the things that make you happy, you free yourself. Society tells us a lie that happiness is in external things - money, property, career, status, relationships. The reality is, these are all just things that society uses to measure our worth and make us conform. If you are an inherently unhappy person, these things will not magically change this, at best they’ll just mean you can impress others. Tru…

100% all these variables are important. A stat that shocked me recently that was reported last month was: on average in the UK, a women is killed every 3 days by either their partner or ex-partner. I could remember that same number being reported a few years back as 1 every 2 weeks and thinking “god that’s high”, so the newest increase has really stuck with me.

That’s interesting to hear. I agree that times are changing and women can be violent aggressors I just have doubts that the shift has been so dramatic and so quick that they now make up the majority of violent perpetrators in certain areas of crime. I could be wrong though, I tend to look at what the stats are saying.

You’ve got a point, you may be right that men make up that majority of victims for lower level DV crimes in hetero relationships and DV within male gay relationships is also conveniently never spoken about. However women clearly make up the majority of those who are seriously injured/killed in domestic violence situations, due to the difference in physical strength.

I feel like it’s a complex issue but that maybe the reason for the initiative is that VWAG tends to be concentrated to two main areas - sexual violence and domestic violence. So, from a reporting standpoint point it’s much easier to track and therefore a realistic aim to tackle and measure success. As male victims are pretty much the majority across every area of crime except those two, addressing it means addressing all crime as a whole, which I assume is a lot more complicated. I guess the arg…

You have to learn to love yourself and stop comparing yourself to others. Looks aren’t everything and everyone ends up losing them anyway. It’s who you are that counts. Solely focusing on one aspect that we view as negative, causes us to lose sight of the bigger picture. Start challenging your inner critic and refocus onto your positives. An exercise for you to try: Pick focus areas (personality, social life, hobbies, career, education) and list down your strengths. Then ask yourself what you’d …

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
