For real? You said sociology is a joke because of the people who support it. I'm not even paraphrasing, that's what you said. Sociology isn't a joke, it's just been co-opted by a bunch of wack job sjw's. which has turned it into a joke.

Ideas are not disproven by discrediting the people who support it. Gee, that was a tough one.

Oh. Sorry, I assumed. The intent of my OP was that you can't call an idea a joke because of the people supporting it.

What the hell kind of definition for "structure" are you using? Sociology is a broad discipline with some consensus, some conjecture, and some disagreements. Who are the people that make it a joke?

Oh shoot, I figured from your response that fallacious reasoning was what we were supposed to be doing. My bad.

Sociology isn't a doctrine or a movement either, but it's a joke, why don't you hold others to the same standard?
/r/MensRights18/03/17 09:42 PM

Of course it does, that's why sociology is a joke.

Oh, so you're saying sociology isn't a joke?

Yep, same reason atheism is a joke, just look at the arrogant assholes who run that show.

I'm sure that's part of it (although we should be above discrediting a reasonable opinion because of what came before it.) That comment doesn't exactly scream "let's have a reasonable discussion!" Some examples of highly-upvoted comments in this thread: Definition of bragplaining: this. The cat scratches at the door, wanting to go outside... Minutes later the cat is at the door, meowing to get back in... At least the cat will sometimes bring you back a dead baby rabbit She is a woman. That means…

It's more like a subtle message that you just kind of don't matter. I don't entirely follow you. What does it mean to "matter"? I've never felt like I mattered to anyone (other than close friends) but maybe the terminology is tripping me up. my point is, the average man gets treated as an autonomous person with ideas, abilities, and contributions to offer others more consistently than the average woman. This is tough to approach once we start to ask the question "treated that way by who?" I'll o…

I'm sorry you're getting downvoted; I'm not sure I agree with you, but this thread has turned into an echo chamber and we shouldn't be discouraging discussion. So to answer your question, yes, many women's experience is that if they aren't being cat-called, they're as good as invisible. I mean, "as good as invisible" is pretty much how men are treated on the street. Everyone's experience is different, of course, but only the upper echelons of men get approached at all, let alone with any regular…

I think everyone here knows what the gender bell curves look like, but the way OP phrased it was poorly worded. The bell curve suggests that men tend toward an IQ of 100.

Premise 1: Feminism as a movement has become more and more fractured without splitting into differently-labeled movements. Premise 2: Two people with conflicting beliefs and goals can both identify as feminist. Premise 3: It is irrational to ascribe any single belief or behavior to "feminism" or "feminists" because there is no clear definition of those terms. Conclusion: The statement "Hating men is practically the definition of a feminist. They actively seek to strip our rights from us" is irra…

You did not address my argument. The style of discussion you're using is where you pick out a specific point from my post and counter it, without addressing the overall topic at hand. You said Hating men is practically the definition of a feminist. and then you said feminism: it has no clear definition or goals That was in response to my post, which was about how two people with conflicting beliefs and goals can both identify as feminist (and I'd like to add that you could say the same thing abo…

feminism: it has no clear definition or goals. or Feminism is, pure and simple, pushing to become a terrorist organization Which is it?

Hating men is practically the definition of a feminist. There is no Pope Of Feminism who decides what the exact definition of a feminist is. If Chanty Binx calls herself a feminist, then there's no real argument against that. If my soft-spoken friend Amelia calls herself a feminist, even though she has never expressed her views unless someone asked about them (and often comes to the defense of men), then there's no real argument against that, either.

There are many reasons why public schools tend toward feminism (perhaps most notably Title IX and the court precedents that have been established) but "because they are largely female staffed" isn't too defensible.

This is an interesting experiment, and I would love to see a more extensive, controlled iteration. There are a lot of conditions that can alter the outcome, and it only takes one to break the bystander effect. It would also be interesting to see the breakdown by gender of who decides to intervene.

If people didn't wear clothes we would be cold. If we didn't shake hands it would make no practical difference to anything. It's funny, I almost typed out "Wearing pants even when it's hot out", but I didn't want to spell it out because I thought it would be patronizing you. Yes, it's practical to wear clothing when it's cold out. That's not what I meant. For me the purpose of a handshake is demonstrating friendly intent. Not wrestling for supremacy. Maybe there's miscommunication between the tw…

Shaking hands is a convention that we've created. Wearing pants is also a convention we've created. So what? So it's become a competition where the person with the strongest grip 'wins'. That's not the One True Purpose of shaking hands. That's your interpretation of the gesture.

When someone holds the door for me all it says is, "Oh, here, you obviously can't get that door by yourself, look how great I am holding it for you." That's not help, that's self-righteousness.

This is why I never thank people when they hold the door for me. It's just a stupid convention.

There most certainly are atheists who fit that view; no argument here. My problem was with you saying That's why I've personally considered atheism a religion.

Ok, I have plenty of gripes with the atheist community, but I have to call you out on this one. If you went into /r/atheism and asked the following question: Which of the following best describes your views? It is certain that there is no god. God cannot be disproven, but evidence points to the contrary. the overwhelming majority would choose answer 2. You can call this agnosticism, you can call it atheism, you can call it whatever you want; that's what the opinion is there.
