If you and your wife have such a terrible relationship that you feel the need to deprive her of basic necessities and bank accounts as "encouragement" than I would feel comfortable calling you abusive. Couples are supposed to communicate and set expectations, and separate when they fail to meet expectations. They aren't supposed to hold resources hostage to manipulate each other into doing something they aren't comfortable with.

Under current definitions "Coercive control describes a pattern of controlling and manipulative behaviour in intimate partner relationships" and requires that there is demonstrated intent to do so. VAWA is meant to protect people who are being abused economically and can't access basic needs, not to mitigate a disagreement about whether or not a person wants to work. That is a ridiculous argument to make, and is absolutely not the same thing. If your spouse doesn't want to work anymore and you don't want to be the sole income earner, hash it out or get a divorce instead of starving them of resources.

It hurts your argument to conflate legitimate abuse with "my dad told jokes about beer money". Not even 24 hours ago there was a post on this subreddit from a man worried that his report of abuse wouldn't be taken seriously, and that's partly because rather than arguing for equal recognition of abuse, some people are on here denying the issue because "some women choose not to work".

Financial abuse isn't "wife refuses to work," that's called being a dumbass who stays with a lazy ass woman. There are good women out there, I had to get divorced once before I figured it out, but there are plenty of women who just want love, mutual respect, and healthy communication. My wife and I communicate frequently about parenting and about any concerns, and we work to address each other's needs, and I feel like this is a good recipe for a healthy, lasting relationship.

It's not a real bill. She's an OBGYN who is using the bill to send a message about how ridiculous it is to regulate reproductive health. But it goes deeper than that, because the message either won't sway anybody, or will sail over people's heads. So she's actually just doing it for shameless self-promotion. As the father of a young woman I examined this from a neutral concerned parent perspective, and the data just doesn't support the assertion. If you compare the youngest three categories to each other there were actually a lower percentage of female suicides compared to males. 16 percent increase from 10-14 years sounds significant, but it isn't because the sample size is so low. It's the equivalent of saying I 10x my bank account in 1 day because it went from $10 to $100.

I currently work in the psych mental health community. Mental institutions are for the acutely ill, and those who pose an immediate danger to themselves or others. Once she's on her meds and the positive symptoms of schizophrenia are in remission, she wouldn't benefit from being institutionalized.
