I think men have been the primary combat casualties because traditionally they've the only ones given the super-awesome privilege of dying on the front lines. That's some awfully backhanded "privilege." Is it still privilege if it degrades the subject to the value of furniture? Not that getting fed into the war machine is just the epitome of honor and privilege, but being treated like a china doll is extremely disempowering.
