I should have posted it with more context. Did you end up reading the story?

Agreed.

I'll repeat another reply: Are you implying that all of the traits in this quote, then, are meant to describe Odgar's behavior, and not Nick's? The broader context of the story suggests the opposite.

Odgar wasn't the protagonist, but a foil for the protagonist.

cheap karma I see it as just the opposite. The "Just do it" message is simple and plain and everyone's heard it before. The only reason it ever gets any upvotes is because it's true and it works. Cheap karma would be when someone makes lofty promises and prescribes overly specific advice that isn't going to work in most situations.

To your very last point: okay, but then at what point do you decide that oral sex is ok?

If you're in an exclusive relationship, then you've gotta decide first whether you're gonna stay in it or leave. And if you decide to leave, then ask yourself what's the reason for leaving. If it's just that you want that emotional spark of pursuing someone new, that's fine, but then note that maybe exclusive dating relationships aren't what you're looking for right now.

I'd say just see the humor in the situation. You're 1-on-1 with a person who's completely uninterested in engaging with you. When you take a step back, and refuse to take it personally, there's something funny about that. TV and movie studios pay thousands of dollars to recreate that exact scene for its entertainment value. Poke fun at her and see what you can get away with. Enjoy the irony in the situation. And when it gets boring again, then you leave.

Is that an evolutionary thing or a cultural thing? It's a cultural thing, but it has its roots in our biology. Before we had culture, it was still generally males pursuing females. Why? Because males are fertile all the time, but females are only availably fertile until they get pregnant. If the males can mate every day, and the females only mate for a couple times and then take months to carry a baby and more months to raise it, then 1) there are going to be more males than females looking to m…

I hope I can expand on this a little. To get what you want from women, they have to like you. But the best way to get women to genuinely like you (at least in modern society) is to live as if you give no fucks, make your own rules, only listen to your inner voice, etc. BUT, a person who is completely this way is either a psychopath or doesn't exist, as u/Wuojo said. It's like the Platonic Forms. Women are attracted to you when you resemble that form of “man who doesn't give a fuck”, but you can …

A lot of the guys that think they are "ugly" are actually pretty good looking and they have self-esteem and body dysmorphia issues actually just have bad breath because they ate a ketchup-and-onion sundae for breakfast FTFY

The difference, though, is we're playing different games. Women want different things than men and will define failure differently than men (regardless of what feminisim says). Obvious example: most men want many sexual partners, most women want just one that is the best one. A very attractive woman could be great at our game, but still have trouble finding “the right guy” which is what (evo psych tells us) she's really after.

Do you turn it off in some situations though? Seems like this habit could easily get me thrown out of an airport, upset loved ones at a funeral, get me reprimanded at my job...

she's just as aware as you are that you're supposed to kiss her. As someone who's recently had quite a few first dates but no second dates: god fucking damn it.

I'm learning that you just have to make the first move if you want anything from women. Multiple times usually. There's no way around it. Like, I'll make friendly eye contact with a girl on the street, hoping she'll return it and then I'll know she's interested (then I can go talk to her). What I'm really looking for is for her to give me a clear IOI. Clearer than I'm giving her, and thus I'm forcing her to make the first “move”. And it just doesn't happen. This is also why I can attract pretty …

This is fantastic and worth the read. I'd never heard that about Feynman. And can I just point out that, other than scientific papers and novels, I don't think I've ever seen so many words with so few spelling/grammar errors on the internet before. You are very articulate

It all depends on what you do with their answers. OP did the right thing by taking her answer and letting it lead into a deeper conversation. If you don't do this, you end up just asking more and more questions to keep the conversation alive, and that gets old.

I do wish that alpha / beta labels were more socially acceptable. I feel like they describe something that otherwise would take a lot of words to describe

Gotta go with different friends. Or by yourself (but I have no experience with that, so I hesitate to suggest it). Friends who sit around and endorse each other's excuses are never going to grow or change.

Similarly, since I started reading this stuff, I have to grin at some of the lyrics of my old pop punk / ska punk bands. I still like them, but I didn't realize how much music is just the beautiful delivery of a niceguy male character's whining about a girl he can't get.

Oh I wasn't criticizing, it's a good line, which is probably why so many girls use it. You just made me realize how much I'd seen it
