I think much of modern feminism is rooted in the belief that some people are more "valuable" than others. It wouldn't surprise me at all that if someone can believe that a woman is worth more than a man (or vis versa) that they could also believe one skin color is more valuable than another. One thing I deeply appreciate about this sub is that it introduced me to the use of the term "egalitarian" as a better label than "feminist" as someone who believes all people should be given the same basic …

I didn’t mean my post to imply women are “evil,” but instead to say it disturbs me that a mod of a men’s support space is clearly parading the space for women’s approval. Do the classic gender flip test if you can’t see how odd this behavior is. Wouldn’t it be weird if a mod of a women’s support space asked all of the onlooking men if they approve of the way the women are coping? Edit: as for your cat comparison, I begin by assuming people have emotions, hopes, dreams, fears, etc. if they don’t …

I don’t understand it. If I walk into a space that is clearly a bunch of women sharing some intense stories and feelings with other women, I would politely make my exit. One of the last things I would think is: “oh, women DO have feelings and dreams and hopes.” The mod seems like a creep for that post basically begging for women to approve of the sub and the “way” the men express their emotions.

It is pretty well understood that men tend under report and women tend to over report on questionnaires about how they "feel." It is no surprise that women regularly self report being in a worse state than men.

We raised a generation of people who think it is okay to be hateful to certain groups based on gender and race. This is the result. They don't have the mental framework to understand that they are being sexist because their whole lives they've been told they can't be sexist towards men. It is vile how common and even praised this is.

I'm very far to the left. These are our crazies. Every political movement has them. Every political movement tries to distances themselves from them. This is why pluralism, free speech, and egalitarian representation is so important. We all mitigate each other's worst tendencies. The Left has been slowly making an authoritarian grab for a while under the guise of "civil rights," "reparations," "DEI," etc. Any movement that silences someone because of their race or gender is vile. We, progressive…

I don't think this is a good men's rights issue. Unregulated AI is going to become increasingly dangerous for all of us. What is maybe makes this a MR issue is that it targets visual pornography which is a market predominately of male consumers. Deep faking ANYONE without permission, with the exception maybe of satire and other fair use clauses, should be illegal. Defending non-consensual deepfakes is not a good look, advocating for regulation of all non-consensual deepfakes is.

To be clear, I agree with your characterization of feminism, but I don't know if you're applying the word "right-wing" properly. So, this is splitting hairs and semantics. "Right" in politics tends to mean adhering to traditional cultural values. Usually they are more inclined to unregulated capitalism and limited social spending. I think the word you are looking for is more like populace authoritarianism. (I'm extremely left wing as well). A great example of left wing authoritarianism comes fro…

A lot of people, especially on this subreddit would consider me a "leftist extremist" on my stances outside of identity politics. There is more to being "left" or "right" than what one thinks about feminism and mens rights. Do you have questions in particular about my political positions?

I have had successful friendships with women, I think the key to having good friendships when there is a possibility of romantic or sexual interest is to be VERY clear about boundaries but not be creepy. There are a hundred subtle ways people show interest or disinterest in sex, romance, and friendship before a word a spoken. You need to figure those out and it isn’t something that can be taught. Something as small as hugging with your hips touching or not (I know it sounds dorky) sends a big si…

But I’m still thinking on this days later and kicking myself that I didn’t respond more strongly. Don't. Collecting your thoughts before responding to abject hatred like that is completely reasonable. Especially when it is a "popular" form of hatred. If you do confront her, just ask her what skin color and gender has to do with the behavior. Press her to give you her rationale for her racist and sexist attitude.

It was a McGuffin. Can you explain what that trance of hypnosis was? All we saw happen was Ken show up and talk about sports and music. Oddly the Barbies seemed happiest when men were fixing cars and playing sports.

it’s a story about girls growing up and squaring adult reality with childhood fantasy. It may just be bad writing, but if that were true I'd expect Barbie to have a real character arc and growth. She didn't though. She ended the movie pretty much exactly the same as she began.

Ken's character was the only one with a real arc in that movie. I don't understand why people are surprised Margot didn't get a nomination when she barely had to demonstrate any range as an actress.

The Barbie movie fascinates me. I believe the screenwriter intended for it to be a takedown of "the patriarchy," but there are many beats of the movie that suggest the opposite. The only time everyone in barbie land was happy is when the Kens were in charge and the farcical patriarchy ruled. Even the Barbies seem happier during this period. The Barbies regain control of Barbie land by using the promise of sex with the Kens, suggesting women cannot compete on an intellectual playing field of gove…

Al Franken handled his accusations in about the most sensitive and diplomatic way possible and his career was still destroyed over the flimsiest accusations. I think the crux of many of the “newer” cultural mens rights issues comes down to one simple thing: men, since they are boys, are held overly accountable for what they do, but with women, the opposite is true, the environment they are in and the people around them are held accountable. In school, boys have been shown to be given lower grades for the same work. In marital conflict, men are rarely physically violent. A study showed therapists will deem a behavior abusive if a man does it but accep…

I had a very similar experience, what I usually told people is there is an honesty in being hit. It is very transactional, sure there are emotional consequences from physical abuse, but the borders of it all feel so well defined. Mental abuse messes with your ability to see the damage that was done. The scars come years or decades later when you are engaging in substance abuse after a tiny trigger you didn’t realize was there. There can be systemic and personal failings, in fact, that is almost always true. It is facile to excuse the individual because of systemic failures but it is just as bad to forgive the system because of personal failures. We can both be compassionate that a someone passed away and be critical of the system that, because of her gender, both advanced her into that position despite her lacking qualification and blames society for her passing. Ironically, there is a good chance that if she wasn’t promoted because of her gender to a job she was unqualified for she might still be alive.

I appreciate your take on this a lot and it reminds me why this space remains one of the most compassionate and inclusive spaces I have found on Reddit. We need to also remember that, while we are pushing for a cultural change, a woman like this is still a tragic victim and deserves the grace we wish all victims of suicide deserve. There is nothing more “manly” than being able to show the compassion and respectively advocate for gender parity on these issues. Thank you.

1950 seems like a cherry picked year to make it seem like current suicide rates are low because veterans would be returning from WWII. Going back to 2000, for example, we see a 21 percent increase in male suicides. That is a pretty big deal.

It seems like there may be a biological reason for it, studies show women have a strong in-group bias which men lack. IMO, a gender in-group bias doesn’t make much sense because I try to see people as individuals, not their gender. But the result of this imbalance is men constantly face an uphill battle on gender issues because it is more difficult to get men to group together. Honestly we sort of suffer from thinking critically about issues instead of banding together.

Adding to this, if you are in a position of authority over women they act completely differently towards you. Combine that with the in group bias that is present in women but not in men and those numbers are effectively much larger. Women band together and will pull support from men on many issues, and men who simp or virtue signal will support some women’s “issues” that are dubious at best. Meanwhile men don’t really have an in group bias and won’t flock to support one another. It is even a social taboo for us to do so (the comment you are replying to is a perfect example). I joined the freecompliments subreddit which is supposed to be a cool space where people can post for a pick me up on a bad day or whatever. I like the idea. I think we should all try to embrace positivity when we can, however: men get almost zero compliments and women are flooded with them. There are clearly two forces at play there, one is men being simps and the other is women just won’t compliment men.

What always struck me as odd about that line of thinking is that almost every time in my entire forty years of life that I can think about hanging out with a bunch of guys, we never talked about women. There is a lot here to unpack. I tend to hold to the belief that people are complex and intersectionalism has driven a lot of our culture crazy thinking we can understand one another based on gender and skin color and sexuality. There are some cultural elements and some unique experiences with being a man or a woman, but the influence of those elements is grossly exaggerated, in particular, in feminism (no doubt because modern feminism is tightly coupled with intersectionalism). Theoretically that is awesome, but in practice and in data: men who earn less are left behind or replaced, but there is no similar reciprocation of men leaving women for earning to little.

It is semantics but, much of this sub distinguishes feminism from egalitarianism. A distinction I find refreshing. If you want “equality for everyone,” say it. You want an egalitarian society. Muddying the waters of gender equality by saying equality is only obtained by continuously elevating one of the two genders is vacuous at best and deceptive at worst.

There is some evidence that men and women have different relationships with wealth acquisition and spending: men on average still have more income than women yet women make up a much larger portion of consumerism, a common predictor for divorce is when a man earns less than his spouse, despite men being underrepresented in college women still have more grants and scholarships set aside for them, boys in school receive lower marks for the same effort…. OP makes some generalizations I don’t suppor…

There is very compelling evidence that women and men treat marriage/divorce differently. Something like 80 percent of divorces are initiated by women and a major indicator a man is about to be dropped is if she starts to earn more than him. There is no evidence that men reciprocate that cutthroat mercantile perspective on marriage.

There is some evidence in data from dating apps that this isn’t true despite what women say. Women tend to hookup over and over again with the same (bullshit estimate incoming) 5% of men who are getting a lot of sex, meanwhile the rest of us don’t hookup or go on dates even close to as frequently.

Just relax man. This is just a discussion, the cattiness really isn’t becoming. I am not defending anyone, just pointing out that what you are saying about rites of passage and the transition between youth and adulthood in many ancient and indigenous cultures does match the caricature you cast them as. Many of those ancient cultures had very different sets of morals than we do because they lived in a very different world. That isn’t a blanket statement of defense either but a call for more nuanc…

There is a lot I don’t agree with in OPs post but you should really take an anthropology class if you think rites of passage were always abusive and meant to subjugate the candidate to society. In most cases it was a celebration of a transition to adulthood following an ordeal that acted as a microcosm for the skills valued by the group for survival pitted against the forces that challenge the community (the one I remember was Hopi boys running absurdly long distances in the desert with a mouthf…

There is some evidence that testosterone is pivotal in being diplomatic and creating cohesion in groups. Your desire to help people get alone is perhaps one of the most fundamental values of masculinity.
/r/MensRights05/04/23 02:25 PM

No way. There is a bevy of historical example of kindness and compassion being a pillar of masculinity. It takes so much more courage and strength to be kind but not obsequious than it does to just be an asshole or monster. Project all you want but my heroes, my ways of being a man, are strong and kind. You also conflate kindness with impotence. You can be incredibly powerful and still be deeply kind.

To be honest, I am not the best source here. I am incredibly progressive, but egalitarian instead of feminist. Most of my circles of friends are laden with people who probably would lose their shit if they found out I even posted this. Including my partner for eight years. That is my next little crisis, but I feel so much happier and stronger after extirpating some of the trash I let leak into my worldview. I don’t really have much for advice but, at 40 years old, I just went through a similar struggle with depression, reckoning with the world views I was letting in without scrutiny, rejection of those ideas that weren’t serving me, and a return to happiness. As for dating, focus as much energy on yourself as you can, have boundaries, be choosy. A man with high standards and confidence being alone is esteemed as much more attractive. I would definitely suggest finding hobbies and communities of lik…

Intimidation: “After the North Van woman learned that she had been reported to authorities, she asked the ex-boyfriend to meet her in person and then threatened to send more intimate photos of her ex if the complaint wasn’t dropped, said the prosecutor” It is messed up she isn’t doing time for threatening the plaintiff. I rarely expect prosecution for revenge porn, certainly not when a man is the victim, but she got away with trying to mess with the judicial process.

The silver lining, men are fighting back the obesity epidemic while women are becoming more and more obese. I am not sure if that counts as a “win,” our potential mates are fatter than ever and we have to deal with the hypocrisy, but I am proud of men for putting up with so much shit and still making progress fighting back the greatest epidemic of our time: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/06/160607113250.htm

You absolutely could be charged for SA for kissing someone without her consent. Context matters here, if you're on a date with a girl and you try to kiss her and she refuses and you stop immediately, I don't think you're going to get charged, but if you see someone outside of the context of dating and just go for it, that's assault.

Your comment made me realize how odd it is that companies, like the tech company I work for, are constantly trying to hire women to increase their representation up to 50% (I think we're pretty close to that now, with only about 35% in engineering which is ABSURDLY high compared to most companies in STEM), yet 30% of women with children are stay at home mothers and 20% without are stay at home wives. If a company's hiring reflected the labor market, then it should consider the number of women wh…

There was a NY times magazine cover piece from the 90s or early 2000s that was about a study of a bunch of couples over something like thirty years. The big conclusion from the study is that marriages where the man had strategies for keeping the wife happy and dealing with her caprices were the happy marriages. There was no reciprocal conclusion about strategies for dealing with the man’s feelings in happy marriages. It just reinforces the position that men are stuck with both managing their emo…

His point is, he should be allowed to not be jacked and still enjoy living whatever life he wants. I agree with him. However, I was a very athletic 150lbs guy and dealt with people giving me shit. I train too. MMA. When I spar with women or smaller less experienced guys, I dial it down just like you. It is mostly because I want my sparring partner to always get something out of the round, which often means holding back. In almost every case I can find something basic that I need to focus on anyways and still get something out of it. I don’t think coddling her is going to change her mind, if anything it would reinforce it. She literally came on Reddit looking to see if people thought what she did was worthy of shame. Not shaming her would just greenlight more sexual assault. If I was her counselor I would have a different approach but I don’t see a problem telling a rapist they are a rapist.

I find a group of men tend to check each other’s behavior if it gets that crass. Mostly I just see women encourage each other to be vile. God, just recently I was with my gf and one of her friends and I just hid in my head while they were saying horrid shit about the friends ex. Thank you for the thoughtful reply, I don’t exactly agree but this is an area of biology and psychology that isn’t well understood yet. I have to admit, since you said you are trans I incorrectly assumed you believed gender and the binary are just constructs. It is always good to be reminded that I should check that tendency to assume I know someone’s perspective because I just know part of their identity. Thanks :)
