I’m sorry for your loss. My brother took his own life four years ago, shortly after getting married and having his first child. I have another brother who has had episodes of depression after getting married and after each new child. By outside appearances, these were both fantastic and happy families, but we guys just put so much pressure on ourselves to be perfect white knights to our women and families that when we aren’t crushing it professionally, it can be too much to bear.

The stupid thing about the whole “mansplaining” thing is that if one man over-explains something to another man, the other guy just says “yeah, yeah, I get it, move on,” or he’s patient and let’s the other guy explain (if it’s a professional setting, that might be the right thing to do out of politeness), and you just don’t make a thing out of it. I really like the idea of “believability” in Ray Dalio’s book (Principles), so I try to find people I can talk to directly about how to go from A to B where the person I’m talking to is someone who has DEMONSTRATED their ability to go from A to B. The real challenge is getting yourself to have these conversations, but the more the better.
