Blindsight by Peter watts looks at consciousness, reality, evolution, and technology. Dense but very interesting read. Oh boy! I finished that book five weeks ago and I cannot stop thinking about it. It deeply affected me. probably the best science fiction novel I've read in the last 30 years. Liu ci xin and his three body trilogy was very male written, the Netflix show basically took all that out and made it female, not that the show is bad, but the books were pretty nerdy and guy orientated. T…

Good lord, this is false. Paedophilia, hebophilia, and ephebophilia are all distinct by clear age divides. This is not up for debate. The term child does not feature in clinical or legal diagnoses of paraphilic disorders. The main reason here is that "child" is too broad and does help anyone evaluate the type of paraphilic disorder. For example, paedophiles are distinct to those that target 15-year-olds. Basically, "children" lacks nuance.
/r/MensRights05/02/24 12:31 AM

It doesn't sound like the issue is with the OP. Try speaking with the wife who ran and took the kids.
/r/MensRights05/02/24 12:04 AM
2

It's been that way for a while, unfortunately.
/r/MensRights04/02/24 01:56 AM
4

This still falls under pedophilia, since our society considers teens children until they are 18 (only certain rights are allowed to 12+ children that aren't to those under 12, like some forms of medical consent, etc, most things you need the consent of the guardian), so the use of language is quite appropriate and accepted within society at large. This is actually incorrect. A paedophile is attracted to prepubescents who are biologically and psychologically different from, say, a 15-year-old.
/r/MensRights04/02/24 01:56 AM
2

You must forgive me; I am not following your reasoning. Could you clarify what was incorrect about my post.
/r/MensRights04/02/24 01:52 AM
5

Again, there are scientifically valid reasons for labelling someone a paedophile and another a hebophile or ephebophile. I get your point that they are sex offenders and should be delivered appropriate justice, BUT from a psychiatric perspective, we need to understand better why certain people focus on age groups. It turns out these offenders are qualitatively different, which impacts treatment, risk, etc.
/r/MensRights04/02/24 12:27 AM
5

People like that don't deserve the amount of respect it takes to use proper labels Using labels in psychiatric or legal settings is absolutely not a sign of respect. I am unsure how anyone would be respected for having been labelled for having sex with, or sexual fantasies of, prepubescent or 15-year-olds. That makes it an excuse. No, no it does not.
/r/MensRights04/02/24 12:05 AM
11

Who said I was making excuses? Ephebophilia is considered a disorder, and the behaviour is illegal in most countries. I am in no way saying that the woman's behaviour is okay. It's fucking not. Second, there's a reason we need to be clear about the differences between paedophiles, hebephiles, and ephebophiles; they are qualitatively different types of offenders with different types of behaviour patterns. In legal and psychiatric contexts, it matters.
/r/MensRights03/02/24 11:06 PM
13

A woman exclusively attracted to a 15-year-old would be an ephebophile, not a paedophile. The latter are only attracted to prepubescent children. I realise I am going to be knee-jerk downvoted for this post, but people, think before you react. Let's not misrepresent terms, okay?

A few weeks ago, there was a farewell event for a staff member (a lovely gay man leaving the university). He decided to thank the team members individually, and he started with me, saying how attractive I am, and that he will miss seeing me. It was just a lovely moment (and I am straight). Since then, I've had a few female staff members compliment me on my looks, often in front of other staff. It doesn't bother me at all, and I honestly enjoy the positive comments as it helps my confidence.

I think it's due to different dating strategies. Women tend to be more selective, as they seek men who are more able to provide resources and protection. So they naturally seek more stable, financially secure and assertive men. The drive for this is female biology - that reproduction is costly for them. Men don't have the same cost and are better off mating with as many women as possible to secure more biological offspring. Hence, males tend to be less selective. Now, this is a very superficial …
/r/MensRights13/08/22 02:00 AM

That seems to be the case in dating forums. I've seen guys belittled for complaining that they can't find someone, being told they need to lower their standards.

Everything I've read about the trial is a clear case of Depp trying to embarrass Heard and ruin her reputation, career... He's trying to ruin her life. So if you acknowledge both are at fault, why is it okay for Heard to smear him in an article that clearly had fabricated information? Wasn't she trying to ruin Depp's life? All over an article that we all would have forgotten about by now. The world didn't forget the article, and its printing had consequences for Depp. He had every right to purse…

They could conclude he was a little abusive, so her statement wasn’t a total lie. They could conclude it’s not her fault a studio decided to fire him based on her gossip. I suspect that's what is going to undermine his case. As much as I hate to admit it, I think Depp's going to lose this one.

I lecture at a major university in my country (I won't name which uni), and head one of the research departments. One of my researchers ONLY looks at DV and it's ALWAYS about female victims. We've received several complaints from men stating that the research ignores male victims (and it does). So I've made a directive that from now on if DV does not include male victims as a research target then it's not being approved. Suffice to say, I am done with female-victim focused research.

For the record, I am not a fan of He-Man and will not watch the new show. I was merely, in my first post, asking why not just make a show about She-Ra if the focus is to be on a strong female character given that, historically, He-Man is the central character of the arc (Greyskull, Skeletor, etc.). I completely get why in the scheme of things it's a non issue, and from what others have described in this thread the story is not as bad as some make it to be. Sorry, I was just wondering aloud.

The majority of women's actions in this context are self-harming and not serious suicide attempts. Women rarely use more serious means. Second, men can't keep self-harming or attempting suicide if they have *shock* successfully killed themselves. So the pool of persistent self-harmers/suiciders has an issue with attrition here. It speaks volumes to the seriousness of male suicide that men adopt more lethal means. Second, I am not even sure there is any empirical research on the 'messiness' of su…

We're probably arguing on the same side of the fence, but I don't think a qual researcher would even consider power, as effect size is not built into the paradigm or sampling adequacy.
/r/MensRights31/05/21 08:32 AM

I'm not a fan of qual research, but you're approaching it the wrong way. It's not about sampling adequacy or trying to generalise to a population, but looking at how saturated the domains are with thematic analysis. Qual research does not generate standard errors or confidence intervals, and so never makes the claim that the data obtains population means; it just puts forward the case that the emergent domains have maximised representativeness within the sample. And again, I much prefer quant …

Around 2010 I made a Facebook post stating how deeply depressed and lonely I felt. I was outright mocked, called an 'emo', and just made to feel like shit. Yet, I noticed that when females on my list did the same they were flooded with support and validation. It was a very sobering experience realising how little people care about men.

Because built into the foundations of legal decision making is 'beyond reasonable doubt'. At least, in criminal matters. The accused is, by default, innocent until proven guilty, and the standard by which they are found guilty is that the evidence is beyond reasonable doubt. If you claim that there is the 'reality of the victim' then this totally dismantles the system; there is no reasonable doubt and therefore the accused is not innocent until found guilty. You can't have it both ways in your s…

The rates are higher for extrafamilial (someone who knows the victim through his/her family) offenders than intrafamilial (victim is direct relative). The two types are also different in terms of backgrounds, risk factors, and personality, with extrafamilial offenders being more deviant, antisocial, and having longer offending histories. So this makes them more likely to offend. Intrafamilial tend to be older and more prone to low moods, so their offending is at a lower rate. So, the incidence b…

It means 'on the side of'. It's a redundant (circular) term, as cis-hetero means you are heterosexual by virtue of being heterosexual. So, cis-homosexual means you're classed as homosexual because you're classed as homosexual.

And yet UK society has for centuries accepted that men are disposable. 60,000 men died in the first few hours of the Somme offensive in 1916 and you don't see the government up in arms that men have been routinely massacred throughout history. I get that women being murdered is egregious and must be stopped, but the rhetoric of women being fragile and must be protected needs to stop. All lives matter.

I was very pro-women in my 20s, and absolutely in support of feminism. I hated men, despite being a man, and blamed everything on masculinity. Some years later I got a job in a very female-dominated workforce and noticed a lot of bigoted comments about men, some of them nasty and unfounded. I switched workplaces to another female-dominated workforce and noticed no difference. In the second job, I even came under attack. I remember Penn Jilette saying that Dawkins feels every attack, that it hurts him a lot. And I agree, Dawkins does come across as a quintessential English professor. He speaks so well. LOL at Haggard and Pell. I have some inside info on the latter, via my contacts in Melbourne.

Among gay men, frotteurism is really common, as are sexual masochism and sadism. But relating to what could explain homosexuality (or the fantasies associated with), that's an interesting one; from within a modern diagnostic framework, such as the DSM-V and ICD-10, there is nothing as these have been ruled out for a range of non-scientific reasons. Plus, the research suggests that a 'gay paraphilia' is taxometrically distinct to the cluster of disorders we have. I would disagree. My feeling is t…

What you wrote about exposure to hormones in the womb is a hypothesis with little real facts to stand on and it fails to explain homosexuality in animals which hatch from eggs, especially those which come from one large batch of eggs. While I agree with pretty much everything you wrote in your post, I wasn't claiming it could explain homosexuality in animals. I was only just bringing into the discussion some interesting research. We could argue it 'little real facts' to stand on, but it is 'supp…

Douglas Murray raised an insightful point, that young gay boys may be considered female by virtue of traits/behaviours and hence, assigned, or encouraged to have that gender. It's worrying. There is some research to show that there is an epigenetic basis to being gay, and some of this relates to the womb environment (exposure to testosterone with prior, and current, male foetuses). I will try to find the article, but it argued that more feminine aspects developed in the child because of this. Bu…

Personally, I don't feel Feminism has made it impossible. Well, at least it's not the main reason. I think online dating has really changed the game and it's gotten worse. The 80/20 rule, that the sites are flooded with thirsty men, and that most sites/apps also bots preying on people, in combination with feminism, has made it difficult. Certainly, approaching or flirting with women is now problematic, and I'd sooner not deal with the issues of being labelled a creep simply because I was not goo…

Bettina is being rewarded for helping men, where help is needed, and there are morons misinterpreting a comment she made about a male sex offender, in addition to the usual idiots making it political when it has nothing to do with left/right-wing (i.e. a conservative government made Rosie Batty Australian of the Year).

Deep down, all women view life (for men) as one massive eugenics experiment. It is vital for women's interests that men who are weak, or low-value, or lesser in some way, be screened out of society/life so as not to contaminate the pool, so to speak. I am afraid to write, that, essentially that has been our evolutionary history. Most men have not mated and produced offspring, given the resource costs associated with mating/child-rearing (and competition from other males). Consequently, women are…

To some degree, yes. Generally, rapists tend to have an antisocial personality disorder or score high on psychopathy measures, history of multiple contacts with the law, young (21-30), poorer social skills in communicating with the opposite sex, increasing frequency of violent sexual fantasies prior to the act of rape, and have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the offence. But these are rarely observed in the general male population.

More information was needed on the statistic to make the reason for citing it meaningful. For example, the ratio of female to male journalists; if there are very few females then, yes, that 19% is a large number. If not, or close to parity, then 19% is just pandering. Regardless, even if 81% of deaths were males, combined with an overwhelming number of male (compared to females) journalists it's still shit that men still outnumber in the deaths department. Exactly. I was invited over to a fellow researcher's place one night, for sex. We were drinking on her couch and started making out. She then grabbed my genitals by placing her hand down my pants, and I told her 'no'. This left me really unnerved, and I said that I have been sexually assaulted some years ago and need to slow down, to which she replied, 'get over it'. I am sorry, but could you please stop dodging the question. There is no hypocrisy in my post; I was simply trying to point out that making women feel like they need to be fearful of men, or live in a climate of fear, is massively problematic because the stats do not support this view. The base rate of women being assaulted on the street by a stranger are very low, and they are more likely to be assaulted by someone they know. This is the case for most of the Western world, barring some low socioeconomic areas (where it is likely a male will be the victim). So women shouldn't need to be made to feel unsafe. In that same vein, the male in the story shouldn't need to dispel any stigma, unless it is the one that portrays men as predators and women as fragile persons who need prot…

No, you can't compare the two but also note that the rates of rape in prison are not as high as many believe. They are still awfully significant. But it's not just being called a cunt or legs being broken, there's a lot of emotional shit that can get inflicted between offenders. > I'm a psychologist too, though I haven't worked in prison settings. I enjoyed it, but the custodial staff are absolutely toxic to work with.
/r/MensRights18/06/19 09:04 AM

It's not a criminal trial. That's actually not correct. Defamation can be a criminal trial (for example, see Canada). Further, some states (and countries) recognise that accusing someone of a crime is not libel or defamation. It's a complex issue, and it's so shit that someone can incur in another person massive legal costs on a lie.
/r/MensRights18/06/19 09:00 AM

I am curious to see how this plays out. Look, I am all for people who have been falsely accused to seek reparations, but every incidence (I have seen) of individuals doing so are informed that the fault ultimately lies with the justice department/law enforcement for pursuing a case. However, these are just men in the process of suing. Whether they achieve their goal is another thing, and good luck to them.

There being no legal precedent to seek damages from a witness/victim. The reason being is that the fault lies with prosecution pushing for a trial, and the issues with the investigation.
/r/MensRights18/06/19 08:06 AM

The rates of physical assaults are high, but not as high as among male offenders, but the emotional harm is far in excess of what males engage in. But rape/sexual assault is not the only index of severity in a prison.
/r/MensRights18/06/19 08:04 AM

It might have something to do with the higher proportion of borderline personality disorders in the population. In male prisons, the offenders tend to get organised and tasks get done. However, male offenders are treated like shit from custodial officers whereas female offenders are handled with kid glove…

There is a lesbian couple on the same apartment floor as me, and pretty much every month there's a terrible domestic row. One was so bad several neighbours walked out into the corridor to see what was happening.

close to our side It's not about 'our side'. Why does everything have to be so dichotomous? Why can't we just engage with people? Okay, Streep said some bad things, but I am happy she has possibly changed and said something positive about men. If we continue to vilify our opponents when they say something we like then why should anyone expect to open up in support of us? We'll just give the impression we're vindictive.

I just don't get how anyone thinks it makes sense. Most marriages end in divorce, and romantic/sexual interest falls within 10 years, especially after children. Why invest in someone who will likely lose interest in me, and then take most of my earnings? The initial five years of enjoyment is really offset by the long-term cost.

There is such a thing as toxic masculinity. No, no there is not. It's a cop-out term to try to blacken all of masculinity by pointing out the bad bits. Kind of like saying, "toxic femininity" because women are more likely to use damaging social strategies to harm other women, or kill their own kids. You can identify specific aspects of any group and attach "toxic" to the name, but that doesn't mean it's toxic, just that you have identified a subset of behaviours or attitudes. But given that ther…

So even though we don't have the information to fully answer the question either way: your contention is the only possible correct one? And there is no logic in allowing something currently unknowable, to simply be considered, unknowable? I didn't write that. you are disproving a contention that we don't know enough to prove either way. I'm sorry, I didn't miss your point; I actually understood your point well enough. Perhaps you are confusing two concepts atheism with the process of atheism. Quite literally, atheism is a theism (latin for 'lack of belief'). Incorrect. Most of our moral system was developed due to humanity having to adept social codes of conduct within an agrarian setting, not because of a fictional entity influenced humanity to create morality. There are also theories, which I support, that some of our moral codes are built within pre-agrarian, or pre-civilisation, times. For instance, the burial of bodies, and codes surrounding the handling of the dead, are really just reactions, or social codes, relating to fear of disease and ps…

Some men like big boobs, some men like small boobs. Some men like brunettes, some like redheads. Some like women, some like men. It's all good. Only the more rational or realistic of us don't have them as such important factors that we would refuse to be with someone who didn't meet a ridiculous criteria. It's okay to prefer these things, but to argue that, all things being ideal, that preference not being met is a "deal-breaker", is certainly odd.

> According to you. Well done! > Translation. Since I don't think breast size is a big deal, how can it possibly be a big deal to you? No, translation: I'm superficial, because all things being great having small breasts is the most important thing ever. > Not really. Women have the benefit of being able to increase their breast size thanks to cosmetic surgery. I refuse to marry a woman with small breasts. That’s a deal breaker for me. That's a pretty massive deal-breaker. So if she were perfect in every other way, you would not marry (or engage in a long-term relationship) simply because she has a physical attribute that's not good enough for you? Your view is tantamount to a female saying: "As a straight female who prefers men with large cocks, I can relate to this. I refuse to marry a man with a small penis. That’s a deal breaker for me."
