Hm....I did argue about that before somewhere here. Copypasta (also read the comments): This goes hand in hand with female privilege and sort of came up in the recent debate. I put together some thoughts and would like to see them discussed here. Feminists (All? Many? Some? Are there feminists that do believe in female privilege and male oppression? Do those have a special name?) do not believe that men are oppressed because they are men. To cite Frye: Women are oppressed, as women. Members of c…

The problem is centrism vs egalitarianism. You are correct that both have similar goals and in fact, I do believe that egalitarian feminists and masculists usually do not have problems with each other. This is where centrism comes into play. You can view society through many lenses and quite frankly, a feminist lenses is a valuable tool, it is however not the only lenses there is. A centrist dismisses other lenses and only sees his/her own lenses as correct. To give an examples of a gynocentric …

I think that type of thinking was very limiting to both of us. Truth right here. Do you also do something in an artistic field or is this just a "bias" of your parents to something that does not pay the bill (as artsy stuff stereotypically does not)? The progress happening is kind of amazing though. Back when my parents married in the 70s they were not allowed to sleep in one bed as they were not "truly" married (in Germany you have to get married by the state first (back then) before you could …

it sounds like you would want your son to have more options than are available to him now Well somewhat. It seems to me to raise girls in this regards is a bit easier. Whatever she likes is fine, you wouldn't really get problems with other people here as in no one would call you out. "Oh she plays with cars, that's cool". Now with my soon-to-be-born son, if he wants to play with dolls, that is fine, too. However people will probably be more likely to say something akin to "Oh he plays with dolls…

I briefly saw the thread and was kind of surprised. To me there is not much thought in this regard. We try to not push her in a certain direction. If she wants to play with dolls, that is fine. If she wants to play with trucks, this is also fine. Same with colors, friends, and everything there might be in the far future. I have no hard feelings if she wants to become a ceo or a stay-at-home wife. Now, if you would have asked "How would you raise your son differently" I would have something else …

I think you got it right. To me it is not as if feminists are completely wrong, surely it can be part of the equation. The problem is to erase another point of view that is equally (or even more so) right.

I am not sure if that covers federal law (not from the USA) Wikipedia: Laws regarding rape - There is no national rape law in the United States, due to the United States v. Morrison ruling that parts of the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 were unconstitutional. Each state has its own laws concerning sexual aggression. Nor is there any national standard in the US for defining and reporting male-male or female-perpetrated rapes. In most states, the definition of rape is broad, with respect to g…

Can anyone help me out by clarifying where Men's Rights differ from Feminism that creates the hostility? In short, IT IS A HUGE MISUNDERSTANDING! To say it this way. There are different kinds of feminists. There are those that would better be called egalitarian (which are those that usually ask that question, which happens every other week). There are also those I would describe as gynocentric (which is not wrong btw). The second kind of feminists tend to argue that there is no female privilege,…

I don't want to get too critical here as this was a good post, but some stuff rubs me the wrong way: About a year ago, I had my first encounter with an uncircumcised penis. With an uncircumcised penis. A surgically altered penis is the norm apparently (which is sad) All of which is to say that I recommend trying it at least once. What made or drove you to marriage? Why did you want to get married? It somewhat made sense. I was with this girl for about 8 years and we wanted to take it further (children). So we married which is a nice ceremony and which also gave us (and me) some benefits. But anyhow, if not having children and marrying is something you want, more power to you.

More recently I am torn on that issues. Really torn. Because when I look around I see the same arguments and logic from both sides. There are shitty feminists and there are shitty MRAs. Not all Feminists are shitty and not all MRAs are shitty. Both groups bring important views to the table, and painting the other group with a broad brush makes you look like a tool. This whole discourse would be so much bearable if we all (both feminists and MRAs) would act more egalitarian.

Men are erased as the genderless norm: The problematics of gender stereotypes are not only ripe within organizational policies (Kirby, 2000; Kirby & Krone, 2002); they also are present in the everyday politics and unwritten rules of organizational culture practices (Kirby, 2006/2003; Kirby & Krone, 2002; Levine & Pittinsky, 1997; Medved, 2004). “Work family balance” is a gendered issue (read: a woman’s issue) as many issues that women and men might both be concerned about become gendered by the …

This reminds me of genderratics series about agency. We as society believe that women do not have agency / get acted upon (when they are less women we must be discriminating them) while men always have agency / are always the one to act (when there are less men, men are doing something wrong). Obviously both notions are false and the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

As Dr. Essex has indicated, male circumcision is much cheaper than condoms + education (one male circumcision in southern Africa is < U$100 and each condom costs almost U$1.00 -- although circumcised men should still use condoms consistently). Okay....okay....okay. Riddle me this, the argument for circumcision is that it is cheaper than condoms even though you of course should still use condoms?

I am not sure where the CDC does that. But besides that, one problem with the CDC survey is that we get no numbers on how "made-to-penetrate" looks in terms of attempts / drug induced cases.

While I understand where you are coming from I see this a bit different. Let me explain, the visibility of male victims of rape as well as female perpetrators of rape is a huge problem in society. Despite official data telling us what is going on, people just do not give a fuck. This isn't just good content that got downvoted or bad content that good upvoted. I knew what you did after reading to the first link. Some food for thought though. The whole gender/sex discussion with feminist on the one side and the MRM on the other has become a huge circlejerk of some kind. The one side says the other is the anti-christ, and the other side does the same. It is tiresome. Yes, the MRM does not really have a profesional wing that does shit, but there are level-headed feminists and of course D-Bag Mras. This shit just doesn't lead somewhere.

I am sure there is social stigma. Many people wouldn't date a single mother/father, also, people seem to be looking down on them. Besides that the mere fact that there are more single parents does not mean that the absent parent produces more babies. I mean there is child support after all right?

I get the feeling we are both not getting each other. Because I am talking about the same situation (or am not getting something). An example. Let us say country x has 50 men and 50 women and after a horrible war there are only 25 men left. For simplicity let us say there were no couples (or children) before as all 50 men went to war. Assuming all of those would find a partner (and all of those are heterosexual, again, simple example) this would leave us with 25 couples and 25 single women. Now …

If men and women are seen as resources, men are less finite than women in terms of reproduction and so women should be saved first. This is because women have limited fertility and can only be pregnant with one at a time per 9 months or so. Men can produce semen until death and can impregnate many women in short periods of time. So for the benefit of humankind, women should be saved. I think this is a nice rebuttal for the above: Why is it worse to kill a woman than a man? The argument usually a…

If we remove attempted rape from the definition of rape [I shit you not, and the question used to determine it was entirely inadequate as well], we have 0.75 million women raped, and at least ~1.67 million men raped/made to penetrate. This is not true. I am borrowing a bit from the way you are argumenting above. Imagine the following OP is a man who has a problem getting custody. Now the problem often is there is a "winner takes it all" custody system favoring the primary caregiver or with the words of Glenn Sacks: much of the problem lies in the way courts treat noncustodial parents So using your words I could argue that that is no Men's rights issue. So let me play devil's advocate for a moment. I don't think this situation was a men's right…

I personally find this stance a bit confusing for several reasons. Looking at the upper right corner and realizing that a mod here posted that might mean it very well fits in here That stance isn't making it more simple, it is making it more complex. Did you get that first sentence wrong? Those of you saying that gay rights are the same as mens rights are full of shit. ... Unfair divorce laws arent mens rights, they are marriage rights. does not compute

Speaking of father's rights you could also argue that we are not talking about discrimination of men, but of discrimination of non-primary caregivers which happens to be men mostly, but get discriminated because the courts favor the primary caregiver. Looking at the treatment of gay men and gay women there will be discrimination against both groups, however that discrimination is a bit different simply due to the genders involved. Here's a link to groups who got these quotas in place: http://www.ncdsv.org/images/Non-ViolentMenHaveNothingtoFear.pdf / http://www.justicewomen.com/tips_dv_victims.html Is there evidence on who put this quota into place? Your links didn't really suggest that. What I gathered from it was that both the family and women's justice center believe there are not that many male DV victims. But getting this quotas into place, I don't know man, isn't there better evidence? (I do believe that feminism mad…

Correlation does not imply causation. For instance, it is very possible that companies that have worked themselves to the top decide to add more diversity to the board and not the other way round (that having more women leads to better companies). Besides that, I think that it is funny that the feminist argue against gender stereotypes, yet when it comes to work suddenly there are female leadership skills...kind of strange if you ask me.

Good replies...if you want to know where her opinion is coming from check out the finally feminism 101 blog, here and maybe here. Some rebutals collected via reading feministcritics an interesting blog: One example is the argument that men cannot be oppressed by themselves. Yet there are many examples of women harming women (e.g. female genital mutilation) that are considered by feminists to be oppression. If women can oppress women on the dimension of gender, then men can oppress men. A more so…

This might surprise you: In contemporary Western society it is widely believed that sexual behavior is evaluated differently depending on whether a man or a woman engages in it (Milhausen & Herold, 2001). This view, known as the sexual double standard, suggests that for men, sexual behavior brings praise and respect, whereas for women, identical sexual behavior brings derogation and disrepute. Although the general public’s belief in the sexual double standard is pervasive, (Marks, 2002; Milhause…

There is a lot of "Apples and Oranges" when it comes to rape rates. It usually is better to take a look at a certain study then to look at a certain study cited wrong somewhere else on the net. There was a nice overview in that pdf on page 10. I am pretty sure the 2nd number given was not a "yearly or 4 year" number but a "life" one. 15% in 4 years really sounds like bogus.

It is always both...nature and nurture. The end result will likely be that most boys play with cars, since there are genetic and hormonal drivers for this. However, some boys will prefer dolls most of the time, and some boys will want to play with dolls a smaller proportion of time. If we cannot accommodate the needs of t…

RES tag? Can you enlight me? Never heard of this. A short rundown on the numbers. There are several ways to conduct a study on DV and we take the NCADV Factsheet as an example. The survey usually used is the "National Violence Against Women Survey". This is (as far as I know) the only CTS-based Survey that comes up with a different percentage than 50/50 (I believe it is 60/40)* but it is the most often cited study. So the NCADV cites that study as their first fact, to give us a high number of fe…

Well not statistically insignificant, I would say however that women's groups and feminists have been downplaying the number of male victims. I see the 85% / 90% / 95% DV gender ratio pop-up every once in a while. When feminists talk about domestic violence, they use crime reports and police statistics. This is so they can say that the vast majority of domestic violence is committed by men. But hang on, I thought we just established that police stats are unreliable? Surveys and scholarly studies show that women commit domestic violence equally, that women do not commit DV solely in self-defense, and that men are injured only slightly less than women. Slightly wrong. Actually they use both. They use the su…

I have to disagree with you on the life span thing. They did a study in cloisters in Germany (where nuns and monks have relative equal lives) and the difference was about 2 years. I would assume it is because the wage gap has been discussed to death. It is flogging a dead horse. The response to what you said is probably the consad report that argues that by far most of it (if not all) is due to choices not discrimination. To chime in again Glenn Sacks is very much on topic here Late in his life Malcolm X said "the enemy is not whites. The enemy is racism." The men's and fathers' movement needs to make sure it never sees females as the enemy, but only misandry--whether from females or from males. If not, we'll become like the bigoted feminists that this movement was formed to oppose. There are also quite a few women involved with the MRM

As for responsible customers, I doubt everyone can always be sure if the product was always "produced" ethically. I am inclined to disagree. Pornography professionals often hire actresses that are financially, situationally or culturally at a disadvantage. What about minimum wage earners working under horrible working condition? How many people are really thinking about where the products they buy come from? But did they bother to ban her or to delete her comment....nope. I am sure you will have your own experiences and draw your own conclusions. You might want to skip feministing though.

And this is done in the case of joint custody (via Glenn Sacks for example). But take DV for instance. A quick look at the feminism101 faq and we see that they misrepresent data about battered men and argue that there is not the need for the same level of services (shelter) for men. This faq is linked on feministing (the most popular feminist blog) and many other popular feminist sites (r/feminism is among them). Other sites with feminist influence like the National Coalition against Domestic Vi…

I wouldn't say it is not single feminists that are the problem, but powerful feminist organisations. To use your example, of course not all Christians are bad, but the church does some really, really horrible things from time to time. What I am talking about for example is NOW being against joint custody as a default / NOWs influence on the shovel-ready stimulus package / The stance of most feminists / feminist organisations on male victims of DV. On the question of whether Stanford will create a home for male studies, Sommer laughed. “No, [it’s] certainly not welcome. The idea that men are oppressed in society is absurd.” I would shy away from that word as well, but also for women. Fact is in certain areas men fare worse than women. Gender studies also does not seem to be a good representative of those problems, so I really see nothing wrong with male studies.

There was the cloister study where they looked at bavarian monks and nuns who mostly live a similar lifestyle. What did they find, the difference in life expectancy was about 2 years. They conclude, if there is a biological difference in life expectancy, it is very small.

The article shoots itself a bit in the foot. First we learn that we can't pin down feminism, that the only point feminists agree on is equality of the sexes, than we learn that feminists are not anti-sex. Some things to keep in mind before everybody screams bloody murder. As far as I understood that happened 10 years ago, which means it went to a court for youths, which also means the punishment isn't that high She had a rough childhood, was doing drugs, yet had no other contact with the police. It is not so easy to conduct studies about rape. People usually do not define their expierience as rape so they have to ask different question. Often when one read such statistics you also hear something akin to "1 in 4 women will be victim of rape / attempted rape" so rape and attempted rape are mixed together. The thing is, a feminist space — unless the topic is specifically men’s issues — is not the place to have that discussion and neither are spaces (feminist or otherwise) in which the topic is specifically focused on women’s issues. Female retirement age will increase by 6 years, which is more than male. If they changed it immediately it would mess up a lot of financial planning. I call bullshit on that one. What financial planning? It is forking easy. If you are born that year you have to work 60 years, after that year 65 years. They had no problem by adding 2 years for women in Germany so I really wonder what is so hard to do the same three years in a row for women.

I would honestly toss aside most of those studies mentioned above. Tjaden & Thoennes aka "National Violence against Women Survey" only asked about "male rape" (women do not rape in that study). The data by RAINN is mostly based on the above study. A crime survey is not a good survey in finding rape / dv victims as most victims of said crimes do not see their victimization as a crime. That is why the numbers that are usually used are based on surveys that ask for a certain behavior ("forced to ha…

Late in his life Malcolm X said "the enemy is not whites. The enemy is racism." I read that manifesto as well as some opinions and I can say my opinion about said manifesto is mixed. While it has it good parts in highlighting typical male problems, it has it bad parts as well. Namely defining man as macho (as if there only were machos) and male behaviour as destructive. Like one blogger said, it misses the other coin of the medal and is (as the writer is a feminist) much too focussed on feminism. But then again, let us see what will come out of it.

Suicide vs. attempted suicide There are roughly 30,000 suicides in the United States each year, and three-fourths of those are men. Different labs have varying ranges of what they consider normal with values ranging from the low 200s to over 1200 ng./dl. considered normal for men and from 15 to 70 ng./dl. considered normal for women. -> http://www.thebody.com/content/art32237.html Looking at the male side, if you have a very low level of testosterone (the overlap you were talking about in the low category of men) we reach something that can be called "underproduction of testosterone…

Sexual assault is a men's issue, too, says Shira Tarrant, a California State University at Long Beach professor who studies gender politics. Yeah exactly.... Too much college campus discussion of sexual assault is dedicated to what women should do to avoid being a victim rather than how men can eschew predatory behavior, said Tarrant, who will speak at Drake University today. D'oh! Men predator - women victim pardigm again.

I liked that part The problem with this tokenism and discrimination is again down to the fact that in the age of political correctness we are not treated as individuals, only as members of groups. Some men will need help to get on the management ladder and some women will not need the help

Well this gives melb22 argument some fuel though as women are mostly driven by estrogen and men by testosterone. So in my believe we will see behaviour that is more likely feminine or masculine, but it shouldn't matter which individual has this traids.

The nature vs nurture debate is a seemingly endless source of controversy and discussion. Opinions range from biological determinism to the rejection of any meaningful impact by innate factors. This general discussion about what causes human behavior also has a more specific component; namely, how do we raise our children? Are boys boisterous creatures who need a mixture of running wild and strict discipline to become decent men? Or are girls and boys virtually the same, and it is simply our dee…

Several points, first of all I assume quite a few men here have been victims of some kind (bad divorce for example). Also this kind of community also seems to lure some misogyninsts in. That might be some of the reasons.

It might take some time to load here is the Text: From Wikipedia: Men's spaces refer to separate social and cultural spaces, roles and norms available to men in non-westernized societies. It is the membership of these spaces that determines a male's manhood. [...] The westernized view deems men's spaces as discriminatory toward the rights of women, and therefore fit for abolition. This western standard generally does not apply toward women's spaces, which are viewed as beneficial for women.

You can certainly not compare performance-anxiety problems with a situation where someone forced you to have sex (blood preasure, adrenaline etc.). And what about morning wood? So you always want to have sex when you wake up? A situation where a woman tells me "this girl wasn´t raped because she was wet, you know how hard it is to get wet if you don´t want to have sex?" would be the exact mirror of our conversation. …

This is certainly not true and at the moment more than 80% of men and women have children and I personally believe that even in these days most men will have children depite the risks (time will tell how this rating will turn out in the future). And looking at time tables we find out that men actually work as much as women. So the average person already balances this out. We have a failure of understanding of different kinds of surveys here. For example if you ask men and women alike if they have been a victim of a crime, more women will tell you that an intimate partner has hit them as men are less likely to see that as a crime. You cited one of these crime surveys. However if you ask men and women if they have been hit by their partner the results are very much equal, and there are tons of studies that proove this.

Agreed. And it is harder for a man to admit this. One reason why crime surveys ("have you been victim of a crime?") as well as official data is somehow skewered against men.

2 Points: 1.) In 1980 statistics come to the same conclusion we have now (men often vitims of DV). So this isn´t even something we knew recently 2.) Sadly this problem is not often officially aknowledged by feminists. In my opinion this is part of the problem especially when advocay against Violence against Women is so widespread. I am not arguing to reduce raising awareness. I want a more equal approach. For example a TV spot where we see at least one abused men would be fine....Tagline "Everyb…

I am thinking about DV and the invisible male victims right now. There is for example the Duluth Model of DV which is based on a patriarchial model of DV. Feminist influence is more than obvious. Also seen in VAWA that funds shelters for women but not shelters for men.

The linked article is pretty good...the comments had some lows: - Marriage is voluntary and I'm sorry, if you are going to kill yourself because your wife leave you, you shouldn't be getting married at all. One answer felt somehow....I don´t know - And to top it all off, I don't believe making such comments about suicide is ever appropriate, even if it is about men Even if it is about men?

I am not going to repeat myself here. But another thing to keep in mind. Most of the time men and women are actually working together. If you look at singles without children, you will find out that women are actually earning more. And our teacher in the last paragraph has apparently no time to edit wiki, but enough time to update her blogger account about her working day...
/r/MensRights09/09/09 08:34 AM

There is no data to support your claims. In fact men are working more hours than women.

I wonder if you have read my article....(the wiki gap was merely just a starting point, not the whole point - I never said that the Wiki gap has any direct relationship to the wage gap). But to adress some of your points - Men are working far more hours than women - When we add housework + working time men and women spend about the same time doing that tasks ( http://feck-blog.blogspot.com/2008/09/men-vs-womenwho-works-more.html ) So your whole point about different working time for men and wome…

Well I am pretty outspoken about the MRM... - I talk with friends & family - wrote several letters - donated to an MR organisation - blog about it I also read quite a few books. It is slowly growing, but it is. About 3 years ago the word MRA was pretty much unknown.

This is all going in a confusing direction right now and yes it is more of a rant but of course discussion with feminists are welcome. Have you read the article? My biggest problem is not the stance most feminists have (nothing wrong with "just" fighting for women´s right), it is the lip-service some feminists are using. The lip-service and the actions go in fairly different directions (and as I showed in the text even feminists are saying that feminism is a women´s advocacy group). And now you …

And yet there is a discussion....a good step in the right direction isn´t it cute-smilieface Back to topic, you didn´t liked the way Glenn Sacks said something and to be fair I guess his words are somehow justified if you consider his point of view (fighting anti-fathers groups all the time that also wear the feminist label) Also let us keep in mind that these were words of frustration, and not words to start a conversation. You will say I shouldn´t have choosen them then, yet I did because I be…

I am sorry but this is a bit stupid, if you want a rational discussion I suggest reading all of this article. Do I have the same bias? Of course, one can argue that only radical feminists or a minority of the feminist movement fight against father's rights, but then again mainstream feminism is very silent when it comes to condemn such actions or father's rights in general. I don't doubt that one could find single feminists that support shared parenting if one is willing to look hard enough, but…

Hm I had hoped the people who downmodded my post would have at least read the article. Have you? I was arguing against feminist who are saying they are against ALL inequalities, fighting ALL stereotypes NOT against all feminists (like I said in the article). I don´t doubt that there are feminists who care for men´s issues (I also said this), MOST feminist really DO NOT as feminism drumroll please is mostly about women´s issues, and especially not about men´s. So if those feminists who still beli…

People also do not listen. I read feministing on a daily basis and on feministing MRA = misogynist and feministing is the biggest feminist blog there is. Taking all that aside a part of me believes the "us vs them" is wrong as previous posters said before both groups have special needs separate movements should handle...but again than there is stuff the MRAs are actually going against the feminist view and are right. And one of this main points is DV. It also does not help that feminists preach …

I have seen this happening before: - Girls problems in math - discrimination let us help the girls. Boys having problems with language - no feminist reaction - The feminist view of DV is men hitting women. When it comes to men being hit by women.....strangely there is silence by feminists - Women earning less, the reason must be discrimination. When almost exclusively men are dying on the job this is not discrimination but choice by men. - Feminism fighting for women who are working....but stran…

There is a simple solution. More shared parenting -> less divorces. Think about it, regular breadwinner with SAHM and 2 children. Usually after the divorce she gets the children the house and, and, and... About 70-80% of divorces are initiated by women. Why? Because they can.

Just look at what feminists are doing. Talking/acting on problems men have? Almost always no. Feminism is a women´s advocates group and there is nothing wrong with that. And as long as feminist actively fight against goals of the MRM (for example recognition of male dv and rape victims / fathers rights) those to sides of the coin called humanism will be fighting. Please also note that what the MRM is fighting for isn´t something new. A lot of these topics (male health, children / divorce) are mu…

I am sorry this is not quite right. Even the site with the answers, the feminist101 blog says that feminism is a movement by women for women. Fact of the matter, feminist groups are currently fighting shared custody in Canada and the USA. NOW and every other feminist organisation ignore male victims of DV even though their studies (Violence against Women study) show that 40% of DV victims are men. Feminist groups are also silent about other male topics like boy falling back in education, the abs…

Aaah crap I had that one so often before. Violence against women is not a problem. VIOLENCE IS A PROBLEM. Advocating for 1 kind of violence in the way feminists do this these days prevents victims from other groups to come forward. What would you say if I want to fight violence against white people, and violence against white people only. Racist? Yes. Besides VAWA does fund womens shelters....but not mens....Sexist? YES!
