Why do step dads get such a raw deal?My mom left my father when I was 4 years old and didn’t allow him any contact with me or my siblings. She married my stepfather when I was 8 years old and she said to call him dad. I did and so did my siblings. At 18 I left for the Army and didn’t return for a couple of years. In my time away I learned my stepfather was no father. He did nothing for me or my siblings than put a roof over our heads. I appreciate he did that. But there was no mentoring or anything quality. I learned more from othe… | /r/Divorce_Men | 22/04/26 09:45 PM
Why do step dads get such a raw deal?It is quickly changing though. The In Loco Parentis concept in Canada is spreading to the USA. This is making more stepfathers pay for the stepchildren in divorce either directly as child support or indirectly by making the maintenance to ex spouse indirectly include the cost of rearing the stepchildren. Think of it as a deep pockets type rule. Mostly in New York, New Jersey, and California it’s popping up. | /r/Divorce_Men | 22/04/26 09:32 PM
Son about to divorce, need advice, or support, or something ...The regret I have for not divorcing earlier haunts me. I stayed, had a daughter, ended up divorcing anyway and the stresses are way worse as a result. Yes I have a daughter that I love. I would have had a child or children with someone else if I divorced earlier. I don’t have it in me now to love again and marry. He has that second chance being young. Share my story with him if you wish. | /r/Divorce_Men | 22/04/26 08:51 PM
Seeking advice after falling out of love with my wifeIt made the divorce easier for me. I have never missed my ex wife one bit. She is dead to me, but is not actually dead. | /r/Divorce_Men | 22/04/26 02:40 PM
Considering divorce in CAI think you will lose half your stocks and pay about $8k between maintenance and child support. You will likely also have to continue paying house note until kids are age of majority. | /r/Divorce_Men | 20/04/26 07:19 PM
I just really miss my kidsGet 50% shared custody and be the better parent. It will work out | /r/Divorce_Men | 20/04/26 07:13 PM
Thanks a millionWhile I’d love to share it wouldn’t be appropriate. Let’s just say she has needed to be bailed out of situations and her career/coworkers look at her as a liability. | /r/Divorce_Men | 15/04/26 09:43 PM
Gotta love itSimilar scenario with that too. I think ultimately my ex is hurting her relationship with our teenage daughter over this nonsense. I have never canceled on my daughter but my ex has. I’ve had to be the one to pick up the slack. My daughter called her mom out on that when I really couldn’t pick up the slack because I had something I couldn’t cancel. My ex called screaming that I have our daughter brainwashed on my side. | /r/Divorce_Men | 15/04/26 01:10 PM
Gotta love itOur divorce decree was specifically spelled out for any expense over $100 with a receipt or bill. Her lawyer initially said $50 but I thought that would be too nickel and dime-ing. I wish I had made it even higher than $100 in hindsight since for a teen girl $100 can be spent quickly. I guess she just didn’t want to be ever giving me money because it proved I was a responsible parent. So it turned out I didn’t have to pay her back for an equivalent amount later. Yet here I am still reimbursing h… | /r/Divorce_Men | 15/04/26 01:04 PM
Gotta love itThis happened to me with my ex wife. She told me about certain bills and sent me receipts and I paid my half no questions asked. But the first time I put up money first and looked to be reimbursed by her she went apeshit about it. | /r/Divorce_Men | 15/04/26 10:32 AM
Thanks a millionI'm 5 years post divorce. I dislike when people say sorry about the divorce. I want them to say congratulations. I am in such a great space now and my future options are limitless. Seeing what my ex has become since divorce I am glad I didn't have to experience that first hand | /r/Divorce_Men | 15/04/26 06:29 AM
Divorce asset allocation in high earnersSorry to say but you will find with that mindset you are going to lose big time in the divorce. She will get half of all assets, maintenance, and child support. You will likely also have to pay the house note until kids are age of maturity or finish college, whichever is later. Then you will sell the house and give her half of the proceeds. | /r/Divorce_Men | 14/04/26 02:41 PM
Negotiating Extracurricular Activity Limits and Registration Priority in Divorce Agreements ExtracurricularsWith my ex wife we had a 50/50 of all expenses but I cover family health for the kids while she has individual for herself. I also cover the kids cell phone bills. No child support order since I have her the house without asking to be bought out of my equity. I paid my 50% of expenses without question as it’s also stipulated that if I don’t contribute my 50% of expenses she can go to family court for child support. So I made sure I paid her back by check or I paid half of transaction online and … | /r/Divorce_Men | 13/04/26 07:52 PM
How did you afford to divorce? Especially housing…I went into it fully knowing if I didn’t do the 50% of expenses, keep family health, and pay cell cell phones that I could be taken to family court for child support. But I knew I wasn’t going to be a deadbeat. | /r/Divorce_Men | 11/04/26 08:45 PM
How did you afford to divorce? Especially housing…I decided to give my ex wife the house instead of having her buy me out of house and in exchange I didn't have a child support order. I agreed to pay 50% of all kids expenses and I carry family health insurance and pay for kids cell phones since I earn slightly more than her. Both my and her lawyer agreed me giving the house and not getting equity bought out was equivalent to child support being paid until kids aged out. | /r/Divorce_Men | 11/04/26 05:39 PM

Do you get Mother's Day gifts for your ex? "From the kids"i didn't. But for guys that I know that did only did it once because they did not get a Father's Day gift in return. | /r/Divorce_Men | 09/04/26 09:30 PM
Would you invest more on your second marriage? Why?The likelihood of a second marriage is so low I don’t think I have to worry about. But if I did find the one that I would get married again for I’d be very invested as a husband should be. | /r/Divorce_Men | 08/04/26 07:19 PM
Wife cheatedIt’s been 5 years since divorce. I had to deal with my ex wife this past week with something with my daughter. I didn’t recognize her as a person that I used to know and love. I’m glad I wasn’t around her to see these changes first hand. I’m lucky to be divorced and content living the single life. When I get asked randomly my relationship status I say I’m divorced and for some reason people say sorry. I tell them they need to say congratulations based on the outcome of it. | /r/Divorce_Men | 08/04/26 12:04 AM
Just signed Mediated Settlement AgreementAlmost $300,000 for attorney fees with mediation, that's crazy. | /r/Divorce_Men | 05/04/26 11:37 AM
How have you been in a marriage for so long with no kids?My ex had two ectopic pregnancies in two years each resulting in a fallopian tube being removed. So she couldn’t have children. We ended up adopting eventually. We were married 24 years. Divorced 5 years now. I dislike being asked why my ex and I didn’t have children together. I was just asked not too long ago after talking about my daughter’s adoption. | /r/Divorce_Men | 04/04/26 10:30 PM
Military DivorceI agree. I was going based on the wording of OP | /r/Divorce_Men | 26/03/26 06:37 PM
Military DivorcePart 2 response: I’d more fight the half pension. At this stage, with only 12 years of service you are at 24% or 30% of your 20 year pension. That is all she should get of your pension. Also make it be half of your TSP value on date of divorce. Not the future value of it and pay her off now if you can. Once divorce get a 18 month tour to a tax free combat zone and make bank. | /r/Divorce_Men | 26/03/26 02:39 PM
Military DivorceI hate to break it to you, but with your base pay, BAH, and BAS you are making like $100k a year. So to make the math easier let’s say you make $24k more than her a year, so $96k net. Half of that $24k is $12k, divide that by 12 months and it’s a $1k a month. Right on the money. Fight back a little but take the deal. She could probably squeeze out a couple hundred dollars more out of you with precise math. | /r/Divorce_Men | 26/03/26 02:35 PM
MediationEven with mediation, if a family court issue with support or visitation arises you can take her to family court and vice versa. | /r/Divorce_Men | 26/03/26 01:21 PM
Life after DivorceWill be 5 years out end of April. Based on what has gone on with ex since divorce I am lucky to be out of it. I enjoy my solitude and trying to date has made me skeptical of getting into another relationship that puts my faith in someone. I’m upset for my daughter ultimately having to deal with divorced parents. | /r/Divorce_Men | 21/03/26 12:30 AM

What credit card(s) did you get post divorce?Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Card. Had the same card while married but closed that card to get a new account so ex didn’t have any potential authorized user access. I did that with everything to protect myself Not getting the same cash back amount from when I was married since I am spending a lot less being divorced | /r/Divorce_Men | 12/03/26 04:48 PM

The Quiet Patterns of Split Custody Nobody Tells You AboutThe kids will keep score when they are older. The consistent parent will win. At least that is what happened with my daughter. Only 1 kid. But I also split with my ex when my daughter was a little older. | /r/Divorce_Men | 09/03/26 04:40 PM
Want a divorce but want to keep the last name of the husbandI made it part of divorce that she can change her name back to her maiden name. I guess having that in there prevents any cost to doing the name change. While I preferred she didn’t keep my last name, she did. Likely to have the same last name as our daughter but then she said she would go back to her maiden name when or if our daughter gets married and takes spouses last name. What had me irritated is that she sought election in a political office locally and there was my last name in ads every… | /r/Divorce_Men | 06/03/26 02:01 PM

What did getting divorced teach you?By my ex wife and I have careers and made essentially the same amount of money, there was no alimony, I kept my retirement and she kept hers | /r/Divorce_Men | 03/03/26 05:50 PM
What did getting divorced teach you?I could have written this myself with exception of #4. My ex wife I treated like an equal and she got into a career just like I did with support from me. I probably did more housework than her and I would take my daughter on weekends as a toddler to do errands while she slept in. | /r/Divorce_Men | 03/03/26 05:03 PM
How long did it take for the crash out to hit you…?I didn’t view my divorce after 24 years as a crash out, I saw it as an opportunity to be happy. I’m alone but not lonely. I did mostly all of the compromising in the marriage, letting my ex wife get her way with things. I didn’t mind compromising at the time, but after the betrayal it made me feel she never appreciated the sacrifices I made. | /r/Divorce_Men | 03/03/26 04:19 PM
Starting my divorce journeyI hope the being rebuffed was what you said it was with no affairs and all. Way too many, myself included, found the lack of interest in any connection was actually an indication of cheating in some way. Whether emotional or physical. | /r/Divorce_Men | 26/02/26 07:43 PM
Going through divorce with wife. Seperated 9months agoI wasn’t happy with a work colleague my ex wife said was a friend. This friend divorced her husband when her child was a toddler, came to find out she was cheating but spun it around how he wasn’t being a supportive father. She was sleeping with many different men at work, whether the men were married or not and did it to have something over them. This friend spoke about her sister getting married to a guy 20 years older than her but then she got pregnant by a man 10 years younger than her. So t… | /r/Divorce_Men | 26/02/26 03:43 PM
Dating again after divorce and infidelity when living with chronic painEarly in my marriage I remember my ex wife asking if I’d stay with her if her health became an issue. If I would be there for her through thick and thin. I said yes. In hindsight she was being hypocritical because she had no intention to reciprocate that care. Looking back there were hoards of double standards. This emotional inconsistency and self centered behavior really hurt me. It even went as far as asking if I’d ever cheat or hurt her, I said no. She ended up cheating. I didn’t hesitate to… | /r/Divorce_Men | 26/02/26 03:32 PM

Social media has destroyed everything in this worldMy ex wife fell for a guy on social media that love bombed her. I was real with her about life after over 25 years together. She threw away the marriage for a fantasy relationship that the guy ultimately backed out of to stay with his wife. She tried saying we grew apart but then tried to get me to reconcile and reconsider divorce (I asked for divorce). I said no and stuck to my pride that I was a good person. | /r/Divorce_Men | 22/02/26 06:20 PM
