One can argue that the 'nuclear family' was the ultimate evolution in familial upbringing. A sole bread-winner would provide every conceivable need for a care-giver that was then able to provide a stable upbringing for the offspring. Such stability provides a ample foundation to make the child successful; high probability of the next-generation surpassing the one that bore it. The current system isn't better, it is a regression. We had the formula down in the 50's- and early 60's.
