We have a whole bunch of experiments where we make people gamble, then we give some people certain hormones, and some people a placebo, and people on certain hormones start choosing riskier strategies. With crime, there may well be a feedback loop. Aggressive behavior increases testosterone, testosterone increases aggressive behavior, aggressive behavior increases testosterone, and so on in a circle. There are plenty of studies that show, for example, that prisoners have higher testosterone levels on average than the rest of the population. In addition to testosterone, there are plenty of other hormones that affect behavior. Testosterone is on average higher in lesbians compared to heterosexual women.
