2	If you're a man, favors are expected. Even on first contact. I think that he wanted to mitigate a certain mentality of hers by not helping. Though helping would be the nobler thing to do, it would not have been perceived as such by her and consequently it would reinforce her notion of men being mostly instrumental to her needs.
