I think it cuts both ways. I was at a meeting the other day (higher Ed) that was me and nine women. I felt my perspective and voice were especially appreciated as the lone man, but I was frustrated that the programmatic decisions being made weren't going to be as interesting to young men. I didn't personally feel marginalized (perhaps the opposite), but I felt slightly out of sync with the group consensus.

Family, friends, coworkers...even setting romantic relationships aside...are a normal part of life for most men. The thing I keep rolling over in my mind is that 1) in countries with high inequality, like the US, this problem is heavily concentrated in poor men with limited education, but 2) in countries with less inequality, (Nordic, Japan, etc.) everyone is choosing to have fewer kids. The second option is clearly better, but it does point (IMO) towards a certain lack of purpose/meaning in life for a lot of folks that is easier to see when people aren't being crushed by poverty.

Can you clarify if you read any of the books you're reviewing, or if this is an account of the secondary sources you found in your quick search? I find bell hooks a bit overrated, though she has some interesting insights on pedagogy (taken/developed explicitly from Paulo Friere's work). Yes, but that's just not true. The critique is made regularly by those concerned with mass incarceration. I hear it in progressive circles all the time regarding crime stories that are overwhelmingly about male perpetrators. Really only partially true. Women (on average) have always had more success in certain areas of schooling (reading) when allowed to attend. A lot of the gap is just women's gains in access/opportunity. It's why these gaps exist in every developed country to an extent. While I agree about the dating/relationship complaints on this sub, I think you'll be hard pressed to find much agreement about which issues are actually important. I'm rather uninterested in circumcision and the draft. I think issues around education/votech, labor rights/inequality/access to female dominated fields, and custody/access/family rights are primary. Everything else (95% of this sub) feels secondary to me.

The wage gap is a parenting gap. It's real, but it's based on individual work/parenting choices. I'm responding to the poster who says lawyers want cases they can win. I'm pointing out these cases almost always settle (if they're even remotely winnable- which I guess yours isn't). Institutions settle for less than the cost of going to court (and potentially paying the plaintiff's legal bill if they lose).

Weird Anglo-centric grouping of countries. For the US, Biles and Ledecky are generational talents. Women's swimming and gymnastics have tons of events and those programs are dominant (as is Aus women's swimming). Countries with less feminist cultures don't encourage/invest in girls sport so they don't develop competitive talent in most events. When ever I ask for data on rampant child abuse I get the same HHS data that overwhelmingly consists of child neglect, which is basically criminalizing poor single mothers for leaving their kids alone when they're working, failing to have enough food, and not keeping a clean house. She's 16, she doesn't want to spend her Saturdays with someone she hasn't seen since she was 2. It will seem like a punishment. If you've been absent that long the answer isn't a legal visitation schedule, it's texting regularly with your daughter, building a level of comfort, and slowly moving towards some voluntary meet ups. Just finished The Meditations. While I found some valuable insights about the power of perception, I was struck by 1) how much of the work is dominated by dealing with a fear of death, 2) how poorly the account of emotion fits with actual human nature, 3) how little concern he has for genuine connection with others like family and friends (another core of human nature). You don't hear much talk about video games and violence these days, do you? For Haidt the video game question is whether or not video games are a poor substitute for real life adolescent experience. He talks a lot about how (some) boys get their fix for risk taking and connecting with others through gaming, but that these digital experiences don't translate into functional real world work and relationship skills. the last few decades (especially 2010s), marriage has transformed from a commitment to one another to basically a business arrangement. Or the exact opposite. Marriage was an economic relationship based on women's financial dependence. Now that women earn too it's a commitment based on love, companionship, and shared life goals. Appeals on conduct hearings typically are based on one of two things. 1) procedure wasn't followed, as in the accused didn't get to question witnesses etc. 2) penalties are disproportionate to the violation. If asked, the title ix coordinator needs to explain the appeals process and potential grounds. Even if you think they're the enemy they are your best source of information on the process. At this time higher Ed is still the most reliable path to a middle class lifestyle. The vast majority of men who struggle in secondary Ed and don't go to college are not millionaire plumbers. If they were getting vocational training and apprenticeships it would be less of a problem. Too many are just underemployed or out of the workforce. I also do think education adds to quality of life beyond income, but know some here disagree.

I think this idea vastly underestimates the complexity of human development. The problem won't be keeping a fetus alive in a machine, but we'll likely never fully understand or reproduce the chemical, hormonal, and environmental (voice, movement, etc.) elements of carrying a fetus to term. I feel like ASD in women is largely invisible in America. I'm not sure that counts as better. Maybe ASD women are able to integrate into society a bit better, but there are also not nearly as many. My son's autism does actually have a bit of a protective benefit. He's rarely stressed out by a lot of the social issues people on this sub complain about, and isn't especially upset by terrible things in the news (thousands of kids dying as we speak in Gaza, mass shooting in Maine, etc.).
