Obese feminist Futrelle

It's tough because center-left "fourth-wave feminism" of the sort that characterized the blogging era has been adopted as the default politics of the mainstream (center-left) media and cultural institutions. There aren't many big-name "ladybloggers" or career feminists because everyone is a feminist. Filipovic does a Substack that I actually subscribe to (don't ask me why); what strikes me is how anodyne it seems these days. I can't imagine she has all that many paying subscribers because she's …

To be honest I'm a little surprised this sort of incident is so vanishingly rare, given the level of vitriol and sometimes dehumanization of men in some feminist writing. Even if women are by nature extremely disinclined to this kind of violence, you'd think it would have radicalized a violent man or two. But as far as I know that's never happened.

This is just vacuous, bog-standard "girl power" shit that we've been seeing since the early 90s at least. It's simply not worth getting upset over.

Sort of, yeah. But in some of her other manosphere-adjacent videos (the Incels one, for example) she does offer tangible advice. (Block the incel sites; focus on other aspects of your life; listen to some Jordan Peterson, etc.) Whether or not it's good advice is debatable, but it's there.

Contra is all right, I guess. For a feminist. She doesn't actually offer any concrete solutions (indeed she's quite open about that, which I appreciated), but I do think that simply showing empathy for men as a gender is itself something of a radical act. I wonder to what degree she is aware of this.

80/20. Simple as that. This is what unconstrained female hypergamy looks like.

Your assumptions are faulty. A man who exudes confidence while having "nothing" to back it up is indeed unattractive. But you assume that there is some way to tell if a confident man has "nothing" or "something". This is nonsense: we can't know everything about someone, and so we accept cues and shorthand to extrapolate from very little concrete information. Confidence is one such shorthand: the main reason it is sexy is because it implies that there is a reason for that confidence, even if it i…

There are a lot of possibilities. In the United States, things might become pretty interesting. By 2050, white liberals will probably get that diversitopia they're always banging on about, but I expect they might find themselves with a bit of buyers' remorse. Most cultures have norms around sex and dating that liberal white America would broadly consider conservative; if those norms begin to mix and mingle with the mainstream, we might see a shift away from hookup culture (which privileges women…

The incel would need to be heavily sanitized for mainstream appeal. Obviously he'd be more attractive than most incels, but the performative misogyny would be out - and that's really what defines him.

It's all very ironic, because prior to the eighteenth century (or so) in the West, it was women who were broadly stereotyped as flighty, sex-crazed maniacs who needed to be reined in by the more grounded, sober, and self-controlled men. It was mostly bullshit, of course: what scattered data we have indicates that men have always been the hornier gender. (I mean, duh.) Yet now that the stereotypes have reversed, women are in fact behaving more and more like the irresponsible libertines stuffy old…

Male, 26, zero. No one has ever asked my number. I don't think any of my friends even realize I'm a virgin. (I've made it known that I've "hooked up" with "a few" girls before, which is true, and I think they all assume those two lame-ass half-hearted hookups ended in sex. I haven't bothered to correct this misconception.)

This is probably the biggest one. (Also on Blue Pill and in any feminist- or liberal-inflected community.) IME, the vast majority of women like muscular guys. Is there a point of diminishing returns? Sure, but if you have big forearms and a defined ab area you can assume that any given woman will be into it.

Don't shoot the messenger. I've asked multiple women this question and the consensus seems to be that a 20-year old virgin is fine, a 25-year old is a bit of a red flag but not a huge deal, and ~28+ is an alarm bell. And, look, I get it: unless he's voluntarily celibate for some obscure reason, there's probably something undesirable or problematic about a guy who is a virgin in his late 20s. Getting sex - at some point, with somebody - isn't that hard for most normal men. Aside from myself, I ac…

YMMV, but Paul Elam has always come off to me as an egomaniac interested first and foremost in the advancement of Paul Elam. His much-vaunted "compassion for men and boys," has always been, in my opinion, an afterthought. Also, let's be honest: he's stupid.

I guess I can see Return of Kings, but I don't think AVFM is quite on that level, obnoxious as they often are. Then again, Elam is and always has been a ridiculous clown, so I can't get too worked up over this, except insofar as it might signal the beginning of a trend. If they start adding stuff like the Red Pill and r/mensrights (and so on), I'll have a bone to pick.

I mean, I don't know. His "feminism" is insipid and watered down to the point of meaninglessness, as is the case with most glib celebrity "feminists" these days. I have some empathy for media figures who see a cultural moment and feel obliged to ingratiate themselves to a certain degree.

Honestly, I've never watched Master of None and I'm not too familiar with his routine outside of Parks and Rec, in which I thought he was great. I do think you can make the case that Ansari's own public persona has in effect turned on him. Would this all be playing out in the same way if he didn't present himself as a kind of casually enlightened quasi-feminist who literally wrote the book on modern romance? The answer may well be no. But again, that goes back to the fact that this is about humi…

I think if a female coworker takes this exact story to HR in a complaint about a male employee it's significantly more likely to get the guy fired now than before "me too". Again, you certainly could be right - I'd be interested in seeing some data, though. (It seems to me significant that, for example, there have not to my knowledge been any major campus controversies to accompany the downfall of all these powerful men.) I'd stand by the hypothesis that the high-minded rhetoric of #MeToo (poorl…

Maybe, but but "small fries" aren't really being targeted in the #MeToo revelations. It could spread, I suppose, but I generally get the sense that the culture just doesn't really care enough about minor figures to make it worth the mob's while. Obscurity, in this case, confers a degree of security. And that's because so far, at least - and notwithstanding some productive discussion that I have seen here and there - #MeToo has primarily been about the humiliation and destruction of the individua…

There's going to be pushback against women whose stories come out more to humiliate men than to expose serious misconduct, and the idea that not all accusations should be career enders will gain more traction -- the author of this article says as much I'm hoping - perhaps naively - that this will not be a career ender for Aziz. I don't believe he has as of yet lost any business opportunities or creative collaborators, and the Babe article seems to have encountered at least some pushback from mai…

No, I'm sorry - I didn't mean to bite your head off. I just can't fucking stand that guy. I'm not sure the analogy itself is a good one, even if you switch SWM and SWF. The fundamental flaw here is that the analogy simply places too much emphasis on three axis of identity - gender, race, and sexuality.

This is old as fuck, and the author is a well-known narcissistic piece of human trash. It's wrong, it's badly-written, and there's not much to talk about beyond that.

1 - They don't believe the allegations, or (probably more accurately) they think they're exaggerated. 2 - Some people, indeed often especially evangelicals, aren't as offended by older men dating much younger women. It's just not seen as that abnormal. For these people, there may only be one genuinely troubling allegation. (The 14-year old girl.) 3 - Abortion 4 - Lesser of two evils. 5 - They just didn't think about it that much. For some low-information voters, politics is like religion in that…

I considered it, mostly as a middle finger - the political manifestation of rolling coal. Which makes me exactly the sort of person angry media bluechecks love to hate. In the end I voted for Clinton, though.

It really depends on the state of academia in ~22 years (which is probably about when my hypothetical kids would be reaching that age, if I ever have kids.) Higher education in the US is completely dysfunctional for a number of reasons, and there's no political will to fix it right now, on either side of the aisle. That being said, getting that fucking piece of paper called a "diploma" is still immensely valuable as a signaling mechanism, and so here in 2017 I still think going to college is wor…

But what drives most of the ankle biters wild is how many millions of dollars his last 10-book contract was for. Wait, what? It was about two and a half. It's not some incomprehensible figure. Scalzi's done well; no one disputes this. But others have done better. Donald Trump is a billionaire. Ted Cruz is richer and more famous than John Scalzi will ever be. Off the top of my head, I can think of a bunch of contemporary sf/f authors who are better writers. (Indeed, I think Scalzi is roughly medi…
