Your therapist is right that relationships should feel peaceful, but that doesn't sound like the main problem you have with your current boyfriend. I think it makes sense to take some time to center yourself and understand your feelings more deeply. But once you do, you'll need to make your own decision about whether you want to stay, regardless of what your therapist thinks.

If FIL is going to talk to you in his language without a translator, can't you talk back in yours without a translator as well? It's not your responsibility to understand him, it's his to communicate.

Yep. You're never going to see all the work the other person puts in, but you're always going to see all the work you put in yourself. So even if the load is split 50/50, it's easy to feel like you're doing most of the work.

Is him wanting to marry you within a few months important, or do you just need to feel trusted? Does he show you he loves you and trusts you in other ways besides just telling you?

When you said that if he wasn't ready to marry you after getting to know you for a few months, then maybe you weren't right for each other, did you mean it?

Can you clarify what you mean when you say that you need to be more of a priority to him?

Honestly, just say how you're feeling: "Hey, I didn't appreciate the other night when you said 'You're paying for drinks.' I felt like you were taking it for granted, and it confused me because we normally split 50/50. Did you mean to come across that way?" If you can't have conversations like this, maybe you should reconsider this wedding he's saving up for.

I agree with you on the first point; it sounds more like OP just got blindsided and wasn't mentally or emotionally prepared to stand up to her bf and his mom at the same time. But I have to disagree on the second point. This guy is 30 years old and his mom is still trying to run his life. If she can't accept that her son is an adult and respect his boundaries, then she's the one destroying the mother/son relationship, not OP.

I'm still confused. What leads you to believe she doesn't value personality?

I was serious. I am new to this sub, so I may just be out of the loop...

I honestly don't understand the issue with wanting someone with a personality who also doesn't look like a serial killer. That doesn't really narrow it down a whole lot, does it?

Does that mean gay men are transphobic if they want a partner with a dick?

Honestly that last line had me dying of laughter

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
