The vast majority of female circumcision is comparable to male circumcision and usually is even a less severe operation. Sometimes it's almost purely ceremonial--a tiny nick where nothing is actually removed. It's a myth that it always involves removal of the clitoris. That would be the equivalent of removing the entire penis and is very serious when it happens. In fact, that's the most drastic form of female circumcision but it's quite rare. So this entire debate is predicated on false informat…

I'm not inclined to disagree (or agree--I'm no therapist) but I'd posit that you just validated my point with the word "gentle". That still means "managing triggers", at least until you're recovered.

There are countless triggers out there for different people depending on their personal experiences. People have to manage their own triggers. If I have PTSD from combat, then I would, for instance, avoid fireworks shows if they were a trigger for me. I wouldn't tell everyone to stop enjoying fireworks. People for whom jokes can be triggers should avoid comedy shows. It's unreasonable to expect everyone else to dramatically alter their behavior and try to bubble-wrap the world for your personal …

‘Women Against Feminism’ paints feminists as man-haters who like to play the victim,” he says. I'm pretty sure it's mainstream feminists doing that.

I saw a Western where the white hatted dood puts some beans in a guys hand, explaining they're some version of Mexican jumping beans. "If you lie, the beans will start moving around". The beans themselves were a lie and never do anything. White hat wasn't looking at the beans. He was observing how the guy reacted to the presence of the beans to figure out if he was lying. The guy was so afraid of being caught in a lie that he 'fessed up. I took a polygraph once but I'm not allowed to talk about …

I think it might be more because they realized that their protests gave it more press and got our message out better. The point of the protests was to silence because they can't win an honest debate with reason and facts, but it had the opposite effect. Maybe they're wizening up to that fact.

I got my feminist friend to re-think this recently. I pointed out that why is it so hard to see men as evil enough to COMMIT rape but not see women as evil enough to just lie about it. I also pointed out that an actual conviction doesn't need to happen to really hurt a guy so it doesn't matter how hard it is to get a conviction. Hell, you don't even need legal action at all in many cases to really screw up a guy's life. The accusation alone is often enough to do it.

I wonder how much of this is a result of the idea that men are responsible for whether the woman enjoys sex. All she has to do is show up and lie there and he's expected to please both of them (her and himself). I'm a fan of each partner taking charge of their own enjoyment. Say want you want. Better yet, just do what you want. You should be conducive to their needs of course, but that's different than being responsible for MAKING the other person enjoy it. All of that seems on the man's shoulde…

As a hardcore libertarian, I wholeheartedly endorse this message. I agree with the right on some things and with the left on other things. I was introduced to the MRA movement by GirlWritesWhat, a self-proclaimed libertarian, using libertarian reasoning and I think that's why it resonated with me so readily. AVFM and Honey Badger Radio both seem fairly libertarian or at least non-partisan and they're the strongest voices I know of in this movement. Making it out to be a right-wing movement is a …

I can see how it can be confusing in response to your post. I was referring to feminist campaigns that try to depict sexy ads with women as dehumanizing and make them look silly by replacing the supermodel women with extremely average or even homely men.
/r/MensRights01/06/14 01:24 AM

In those attempts to spoof sexy women ads by replacing the women with men in the same poses, they always replace supermodels with men who clearly aren't supermodels. Of course it looks ridiculous. It's dishonest. If they just replaced female supermodels with male supermodels in the same poses, it would just look familiar. It would look like these ads that everyone has seen many times.

Well, if you're planning to have children, it's natural to be concerned with whether the children you're investing TREMENDOUS personal resources in are actually your own biologically, seeing as how natural selection through evolution is based on whether genes successfully perpetuate themselves or not. obviously keeping them legal would "work" but would result in lots of abortions That's far from certain and rather over-simplified. Making something illegal doesn't necessarily result in less of it. NH has no seat belt laws and yet our use of seat belts is statistically almost exactly the same as states with seat belt laws. It would, however, result in less punishment for it which seems to matter more to some people. In any case, if you make abortions mostly illegal but provide certain "outs", t…

Because it's not my body. The idea that a man should have any power to force a woman to carry a pregnancy to term is just ridiculous. I'm a hardcore MRA but this is not a battle we should be picking, and I suspect most MRAs agree with me. I'm with feminists on this one... somewhat. Women should have 100% of the say in whether they have a physical abortion. Men, however, should have the same amount of time to decide if they want a legal abortion (none of the rights or responsibilities of parentho…

“But how could it be any more obvious that we still live in a patriarchal world when feminism is a bad word?” Why is it not even considered that feminists are primarily responsible for feminism having a negative connotation attached to it? It's a hate movement. The lie of "patriarchy" is part of that--the lie that men are some kind of evil force conspiring to oppress women. Non-hateful feminists exist but they're the exception. People don't want to be associated with a hate movement.

I think he means that the word "creep" often means little about the man's behavior and is almost exclusively defined by whether a woman is attracted to a man and therefore welcomes his advances. If she doesn't like him, she is appalled by his advances, even if they're tactful.

Unisex restrooms would benefit everyone in so many ways; not just trans people. Spend a little more on making stalls more private but a lot less on having two separate rooms with complete infrastructure. Make stalls for urinals as well. A lot of guys are pee-shy even around other guys. Men and women can use the same sinks. This would likely mean a much more efficient use of resources and less waiting for everyone. Guys are competitive. I think even that is something of an mis-characterization. The job market itself is highly competitive. Generally people in that market realize that if they don't do a good enough job and get noticed in positive ways, they can be replaced or they at least won't get that promotion. It's not a guy thing. Guys just go into it knowing nothing's going to be handed to them on a silver platter. Misogyny isn't rampant. Women aren't generally hated. The truth is they're generally no…

I'm fairly outspoken on both LGBT issues and MRA issues and I'm 100% gay. I feel like it potentially allows me to be a bit more objective about it. I can watch heterosexual interaction without as much bias. For instance, I've watched my str8 friends whom I knew well transform dramatically in the presence of certain (most) women and I think that was one of the things that made me question the idea of women being essentially powerless in Western societies.

They should do a thing where a white person goes around picking the pockets of black people and video their reactions. That'll teach them a lesson! I'm going to guess the gender they chose to exclude was the one significantly more likely to be the victim of a violent crime.
/r/MensRights24/03/14 04:45 PM
1

Domestic violence appears to not be gendered. The difference is people care when a woman is the victim. They don't care when men are the victim, regardless of who does it--a woman or another man. We're supposed to "man up" and not rely on others for help. Meanwhile, we're also under pressure not to hurt a woman, not even in self-defense. It's a rock and a hard place. Women effectively have free reign to be just about as abusive as they want.

Apples and oranges. Our bodies all have the potential to express male or female characteristics. Gender isn't black and white. Intersexed conditions are very common. There are plenty of feminine men and masculine women and various states in between. Hormone supplements demonstrate that. I'm a huge proponent of trans rights and acceptance myself and feminism frequently runs contrary to those goals. Trans men (formerly bio female) are often seen as traitors wanting "male privilege". The data is fairly meaningless because it's not per capita. Women have higher custody rates so I would expect more abuse cases if men and women abused at roughly the same rate. The fact that women get higher custody rates is its own issue, of course.

It's not just that. It's also partly due to the nature of the crime, particularly date rapes. It SHOULD be hard to convict purely on the basis of two witnesses: the alleged perpetrator and alleged victim. It SHOULD take substantial evidence, probably more than a victim's accusation, to convict someone of a very serious crime. This is true of any crimes that happen in a private space with no witnesses. Is this really a problem? Maybe it's something about being in a red state which has very few gay bars. In my many years going out, I got hit on one time by a persistent drunk woman. In general, I've never felt like gay bars were being overrun by women or heard anyone else complaining about them. In fact, gay bars are generally friendly to women but lesbian bars often ban men unless they're being escorted by a woman.

A whole bunch of bullshit in that first paragraph. Is that based on someone's anecdotal experience? I've been gay for quite some time and I've never heard of women being treated badly in a gay bar. I admit, I laugh at the "two black eyes" joke and I've told it myself many times. Also, I'm usually the first one to defend rape jokes. Consider this though. What makes that joke funny is it's SO over-the-top awful and you're making fun of the violence. It's like violence in the cartoon. You're thinking "OMG that's SO uncalled for! Haha" The one above you're siding with the violent one and thinking "Oh, he's so sexist. Glad he got what he deserved!" You're laughing at the victim of the violence.

I'll be impressed when I see more not-hot women in movies and TV who are still interesting. I guess I agree with (many?) feminists in that particular respect but I wonder how much of challenge that will be. I feel misogyny usually expresses itself as some form of disrespect. It's not really hate and so it may seem like a strong word to use, but there is a real problem there. Our society doesn't respect women as much as men in general. It's a long subject to get into how to change that but I would summarize it by saying we need to actually raise our expectations of women because people tend to only live up to their expectations and societal expectations of women tend to be low, and the feminist move…

I think in the past, that may have been true, and it may still be true for those who are just discovering they're gay. I have women friends. That's fine. They don't wield the power over me that women wield over str8 men. In a way, I feel like it's safe for me to speak out on these issues because women have nothin…

True. Of course there are good women out there. I think the pickin's are pretty slim though. Even if they're not activist feminists, they've managed to create a culture of entitlement for women that a lot of them buy into and which causes them to be abusive toward men. I would hate to have to navigate that minefield, as spagma said. And even if I were to date a feminist gay man, he doesn't have that sense of entitlement by virtue of not being a woman himself.

FWIW, modern feminism has made me grateful I'm gay. I'm so glad I don't have to date women who have been brainwashed by that stuph.

When the CDC defines rape as forced penetration and specifically excludes from it's definition forced to penetrate, then it can of course look like men are doing all the raping. All you have to do is look at the CDC's statistics from recent years and make sure you include all the forms sexual assault can take and this conclusion is immediately called into question (for those who won't go look it up, they're close to even), even before accounting for the fact that men are under tremendous social …

And we shouldn't have a say in whether a woman aborts. We should, however, also have the option to have a (legal) abortion.

No, but it's also based on a fallacy. Men are subject to a great deal of oppression. Just hang around this subreddit for a while to see that.

I'd never seen the video or heard the song until I heard about the feminist parody of it. So of course I had to go watch it and bump the views. They gave it tons of free promotion. It's like when Christian conservatives boycotted Disney. They put Disney out of business overnight! Oh wait, no they didn't. They gave Disney a bunch of free publicity, as if they needed it.

He's a guy so he must like being raped? I think scenes of humorous or trivialized female-on-male rape are particularly important to gender swap, even more so than scenes of domestic violence. They're also fairly common. She was doing hardcore S&M things to him that most guys would not be into, particularly when the grandmother joined in. No judgments on people who are, but he was saying "no" over and over. That scene wasn't intended to be titillating. It was intended to be both scary and funny.

When I worked in a flower shop, the women were also getting me to carry things for them with this form of flattery. It always seemed manipulative to me. Sometimes it was justified. I was, after all, a man in my prime and many of them were middle-aged or older women and they occasionally needed a particularly heavy box moved. Most of the time it was something they could easily handle and they were just being lazy and feeling like that was something beneath them. I couldn't help but think "Yes, me…

That's good advice. FWIW, this is a podcast by small-L libertarian women and they tend to have a much more balanced view of sexism and how it swings both ways. In this particular show, only one of the original hosts is there and she has two guests on who self-describe as feminist. The host does not self-describe as such.

I'm mildly pedophobic now. I'm terrified of being around children for long, particularly alone with them, for fear that someone will speculate that I'm doing (or thinking) something inappropriate. It's definitely sad. I love kids.

I had a feeling this "censorship" was probably not related to it being anti-feminist and was probably some other issue. I think we should try to do a little due diligence and not cry "wolf". Helps our credibility here. MRAs already tend to be better than most feminists in that regard but we can be better still.

Tomcats 2001 Starts off consensual until the woman ties him up and starts torturing him, doing BDSM that is completely non-consensual, it keeps escalating, he's freaking out and saying to stop. Suddenly an older woman shows up and joins in. It's depicted as being hilarious.

Just a list of strawman arguments. I hope folks will go to a little effort to visit the MRA sites referenced and hear this straight from the horse's mouth rather than the strawman versions listed there. That should be all it takes to see through this bullshit.

Try actually reversing the sexes when you're relating some news event and get the reaction first. Then correct it to what actually happened. Better yet, take an event that's already familiar and that has a perverse reaction that's gender-based and simply retell it with the genders switched, maybe pick other people (like celebrities) that people can relate to as well of the opposite genders.

Well, as I understand it, statistically the highest rate of domestic violence is in lesbian relationships and the lowest rate of domestic violence is in gay male relationships. But that's just what I've been told and I don't have a source for that.

The fallacy at the root of feminism is that this is strictly oppression by men for the benefit of men and to the detriment of women when in fact the expected roles of men and women historically have resulted from a sort of bargaining and negotiation back and forth that ultimately served their mutual goals in primitive times when survival of the human race in harsh conditions required specialized roles. Men assumed most of the risk in order to shelter women and children because they were so cruci…

I'm really skeptical about a lot of the conclusions in that paper. It repeatedly seems to ignore a glaring fact about rape cases involving someone known by the accuser. There are rarely going to be any witnesses or evidence in many date rape scenarios. That sucks but it's just a reality of the crime. In many cases like that, it's going to come down to figuring out which person is telling the truth and which is lying. It doesn't surprise me that a lot of those cases aren't pursued far or that, wh…

Both pieces claim these were posted anonymously and even say how disturbing that is when Men's Rights Edmonton has stepped forward and taken responsibility for them. False accusation stories are coming out steadily now. I think of this the same way I think of abusive cop stories that we're also starting to see more off now that practically everyone has a cell phone with a camera. It's nothing new. Everyone just assumes cops are all good guys and that they must be isolated incidents. Now we're finally seeing evidence. These false-accusation stories are the rare cases where someone was actually caught red-handed or caught admitting that they lied. It has to be…

One of my immediate thoughts as well. By what criteria are they judging it successful? Less rape incidents (or less reports)? More reports of rape (possibly more incidents)? I assume it's successful because lots of feminists say so. Another immediate thought is that parody is protected speech and is not considered a copyright violation. They're really reaching.

They're right on many individual points, probably a majority. My main beef is with the final conclusion--that the traditional roles of men and women are the result of men controlling and exploiting women purely for the benefit of men. It simply fails to acknowledge that women have power in certain contexts and men in others, that there are privileges and disadvantages on both sides in different contexts, and that both men and women have historically had a significant hand in shaping the traditio…
