I think the exposing that is being done is that in large parts of the world, men are more in need of protection against societal expectations than women are. Also makes me wonder about how suffragetes gained steam after the war: when the men went fighting it became clear women could work in factories and run things just as well. It ultimately has its roots in the urban bourgeoisie wanting to claim more power from the Church and the monarchy.
