Man I’ve been calculating my future monthly budget once the divorce is final, and yea, child support is a lot, but I think I’ll still be better off financially. It’s absurd how much she spends!

I’m planning on giving up a larger share of my retirement account than she would otherwise be entitled to. I’d rather give up that lump sum now to be able to afford a quality of life now (and still be able to afford to save a little for later..) What state?

Getting ready to enter this same world. We’re playing our parts for the rest of the school year for the kids, but it all becomes very real this summer, and I’ve become acutely aware that I don’t have many friends outside of my marriage (we’ve been together since we were teenagers..) Anywho, anyone in the Maryland area going through it that wants to meet up?

That’s exactly what we have in the works. To keep her from touching my pension, I’m giving her all the equity in the house (spreadsheet to prove relatively equal value - just like you mentioned). Also giving her a lump sum from a retirement account to cover alimony. Otherwise, I’ll just owe child support. Question for you though - do you regret it? Do you wish you had paid alimony instead? Or is the finality proof enough that it’s the way to go?

As I navigate this process, I’m finding that more and more of “our” friends were more so “her” friends and that my friends were basically her friends husbands.. (we’ve been together since we were 16 and 18, now I’m 37 and have no identity that doesn’t include her!) Anyways, anyone in Maryland want to grab a beer?

Same boat here too - it sucks in the moments where I almost forget it’s our last Christmas as a “happy family” and then remember and feel the pain all over again.. I’m also leaving her everything, which will be difficult short-term, but it will make the kids only need to adjust half their life instead of a full uproot. I’m terrified of the moment the kids refer to her house as ‘home’ and my future house as just ‘Daddy’s house’. I want them to be ‘home’ in both!!

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
