My campus has a women’s studies department, but from my experience, it’s a very level-headed one. I’m actually taking a women’s studies class this semester as part of the psychology major, and it’s one of my favorites this semester. If there are any negative consequences, though, I will make sure to give an update

You’re right. The lecture just wasn’t hugely thorough with all of these types of DV. The lecture was about aggression in general, and we didn’t spend enough time on the subject to get into such detail

I’d prefer not to say just to protect my identity a bit, but it is a major university. Average high school GPA is around 3.8, and average SAT/ACT is 1250-1370/29-31. Student population is about 35k. And it’s name would be recognized by most Americans

I can understand how you could see it like that. My professor made sure to clarify in the lecture that the reason men generally do more damage is due to strength rather than any innate “evil” within men. She also made sure to say that she believes women are more often guilty of DV because it is perpetuated as an okay thing in movies and television where the woman is perceived as justified or even humorous, and that women aren’t innately violent either. She’s a very well-balanced and great profes…

Haha No, no. The class was very civil and the professor has an awesome reputation at my school. I really doubt she’ll receive anything negative from the lecture. At most, maybe one email from a disgruntled student.

The slide was created in response to a question from a previous lecture. The student asked about domestic violence about gender and asked which DV demographics generally caused more physical harm and which gender had a higher rate of DV. Iirc, the question was asked in that order, and the thusly the slide was written in that order.

My professor is one of the most well-liked among the students in the psychology department. The class was very civil and understanding in the lecture. I'm sure her status with the school and with the students will be just fine, and thank goodness. She's an awesome professor.

Sorry, I'm a bit late to the thread after posting, but I just want to clarify that the professor made sure to emphasize that domestic abuse is never justified, and that it is not okay at all for women to abuse men, though it is often perpetuated by movies, television, etc. I can definitely see how it would seem that way without that context, though.

My professor is female. And there were a few questions after she presented the slide, but they were mostly for clarification, not real disagreements. The class is also between about 60% and 70% female, and it was - at least vocally - an understanding reaction. The professor is one of the most popular in the psychology department and does a really good job of answering questions and doing research in between classes to answer students' questions, so she has a lot of respect and credibility.

The intention of the slide is not to ban men from shelters, but rather say that when men abuse women, they usually cause more physical damage than women against men. The professor made sure to clarify in the lecture that this was primarily due to men simply being stronger than women, generally speaking. I absolutely agree with you, though. Shelters banning men are not justified no matter which way you look at the statistics.

Sure, it could happen to any guy, but I think the post sets it up as if its the norm, with the title being "the naked truth". IMO, it is saying that this is true marriage and divorce today, and others are the exception.
