I, too, have a serious mental illness (major depressive disorder), and it took me 4 years to get a handle on it to make myself an attractive partner. In those 4 years, I attempted suicide at least 3 times and was hospitalized each time. Honestly, it was my hospital stays that helped me the most. Group therapy, 24/7 access to psych professionals, and seeing people worse off than me (I know what sounds horrible, but whatever works).
