Dude, they were just being polite and I can guarantee you they probably laughed behind your back... I had the exact same scenario happen right in front of me, with a beautiful Korean girl being compared to another celebrity: some socially awkward guy trying to be nice to her told her that she was as "beautiful as Catherine Zeta Jones". She only managed to awkwardly say: "oh wow... thanks..." I barely managed to hold it together and not laugh out loud, but the moment he left, she burst out laughi…

This is very, very true. Flirting is a lot easier with men you are comfortable with. If you really do have an intense crush on someone, flirting is a lot harder. I think in OPs case, it is less about women finding him better than them and more that they see him as attainable. After all, it makes logical sense: you are not going to shoot your shot if the target is too far away.

Yes, there are massive cultural differences when it comes to smiling in public. In Eastern Europe and Russia, smiling in public is seen as... stupid, to put it mildly. I have had people tell me, more explicitly, that someone randomly smiling at strangers in public must be a sign of mental illness or inferior intellect. So don't expect the "smiling as a sign of attraction" thing to work well over there

Her breath became faster because of the physical activity, not because of sexual arousal :p You simply can't infer if she is comfortable with her sexuality at all from an interaction like this. Maybe she just wants to dance and enjoy the music. She probably did feel that you took it the wrong way and tried to put some distance. That's all.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
