The problem with the eugenics argument is that you'd be trying to determine a person's genetic characteristics by examining their parents physical characteristics. 1	CMV: Men who are considered 'Beta' are better off alone. That's true that more alpha people have probably hopped on the self improvement train (from a young age or just more aggressively than the average person). However, I think there are points where self improvement reaches certain limits and further increases will only provide diminishing returns. Beyond that points, its just chance factors that have any real effect. So I don't think it's a losing battle.
