Historical revisionism isn't a bad thing, in fact it's the foundation of the discipline. If "detail detail detail" contradict previous understanding of a period, event etc, as in this case, then that's just good history.

I came here to post this. It's really depressing that a "study" debunked back in 1994 is still being trotted out as fact. It's like they're actively trying to prove Sommers thesis.

I really don't have the energy to read garish suggestions of sexual violence in immature chatter. Jesus Christ, I've been threatened with death in person and have raised less of a stink about it than this. "Oh no! I saw a private conversation in which a bunch of frat boys joked that they wanted to fuck me. Help!" Even if they did say they wanted to rape her this would be worth no more attention than a 13 year old X-Box player telling his opponents to suck his dick.
/r/MensRights04/03/14 12:20 AM

You're reading a lot into a few sentences that basically amount to "I dislike her and want to have sex with her". Even of all these elements were spelled out in their conversation, they still aren't synonyms for holding someone down and fucking them against their will.
/r/MensRights04/03/14 12:05 AM

You have yet to demonstrate that they were discussing rape. Are you even familiar with the term "hate fuck"? What have I missed here, because if your only reason for thinking they were talking about rape is the fact that she was a political opponent and someone used the word "punish" then you have a staggeringly unnuanced view of human relationships.
/r/MensRights03/03/14 11:53 PM

If it was indeed a private conversation then it's entirely reasonable to expect it to remain so. I know I wouldn't be at all comfortable for my private correspondence being made available to the public.

Human sexuality is really quite diverse, including consentual acts far more extreme than "punishing someone with their shaft". Following your logic, discussing any sexual fantasy that's even the slightest bit rough or that has a dominant/submissive dynamic is discussing rape. This is a ridiculously prudish stance to take.

Is it grossly offensive? Yes it is. It's not the way people should talk about anyone, and if a group of women were referring to man like that we'd be the first to call them out. Maybe if they were sending her these messages unsolicited. They weren't though, so I really don't see a problem with a group of friends, male or female, chatting about how they really want to have sex with someone. The only complaint I'd raise would be when such conversations between men are condemned as rapey and misogy…

It could make all the difference. I'm not a native French speaker, but I see that phrase as nothing more than your run-of-the-mill idle sexual fantasising, much like someone would say "I would do wicked things to [insert name]". Only the most over-sensitive person in the world would construe that as rape, let alone a genuine threat of rape.

Because you can't control for the myriad variables, therefore taking a scientific approach is pointless. Hell studying human society whatsoever is completely pointless until such time as it can be crammed into a test tube in a sterile lab /s

The parties I chiefly had in mind when I entered this discussion was thinking of the UK Labour Party, the SDAP, which absolutely did identify as Marxist. The evolution of these political groups is quite messy, and I was doubtlessly oversimplifying things. However, for all intents and purposes, modern Social Democracy remains distinct from Democratic Socialism, be it Marxist or otherwise. To refer to Social Democracy as "socialist" is undermine the fundamental meaning of the latter term, which is…
/r/MensRights02/11/13 04:55 AM

Of course one doesn't have to be a Marxist to be a socialist, I didn't mean to imply that was the case. What I was arguing was that, while these parties started off socialist (traditional Marxist to be specific) they have since dropped the Marxism and with it their socialism. Some members of Social Democratic parties might still consider themselves socialist, but really they're just pushing for a stronger welfare state than an economy based on worker ownership of the means of production.
/r/MensRights02/11/13 04:11 AM
1

Social Democratic parties started out as Marxists who believed a communist society would be ushered in through filling the seats of European parliaments. In the last 150 years or so, they have dropped the Marxism, instead preferring a "mixed" economy. I.e. a capitalist economy with a strong social safety net. EDIT: Removed the quote that decided to appear when I posted from my phone.

OK, so we're pretty much done here. You've now reduced distinct political ideologies to synonyms of governance, rendering any use of such terms redundant.

The Nazi Party started with a nominally socialist wing designed to draw support from a population that was largely in favour of Socialism. In the early days the SA even took the side of labour during strikes and disputes, though they also used violence and intimidation against left wing parties. This wing was thoroughly purged during the Night of the Long Knives however. You are correct that Fascism is the marriage of Government and Corportate interests. This is what makes it right wing in my vi…

You're moving the goal posts here. If you're only going to consider popular conceptions of what is left and right, then I'm afraid you're just going to have to accept that both political wings have people who are A-OK with statism so long as its power is used to push for things they want. People on the left want a welfare state, people on the right want a strong military. Furthermore, most people consider Nazism as the extreme right, so you're assertion that the Nazis were left wing is also wron…

Council Communism, Anarcho-Communism, Anarcho-Synidcalism, Mutualism, Collectivism, Individualist Anarchism etc are all anti-statist philosophies. They are all also left wing philosophies. In fact, prior to the rise of Lenin - who incidentally used a lot of Anarchist and Council Communist rhetoric to gain popular support e.g. "all power to the soviets" - Bolshevism was considered to be on the right wing of the radical left. It wasn't a mistake when Lenin referred to Council Communists like Rosa …

I can be pretty sure that when I walk down the street, nobody will yell at me about my body or tell me what they want to do to me sexually. No, I've experienced this before. I also note that it limits verbal harassment to sexual comments, as though other, perhaps more threatening taunts and jeers are somehow less of an issue. I've had strangers threaten me with death while I was going about my normal business, so the idea that comments about attractiveness are somehow the be all and end all of s…

That's the only thing I found vaguely amusing about this "parody", and it's clear that it was entirely unintentional. If one watches videos by any number of female pop acts, scantily dressed men appear frequently. The video for "Blurred Lines", by comparison, is quite tongue in cheek.

the media has a textbook feminist agenda which, as we know, includes the painting of women as victims and the avoidance of ever painting men as victims. No. People have always been concerned over the deaths of women and children more than men, media coverage reflects that. That feminism uses this old, paternalist norm does not mean it's the cause.

One has to wonder about their priorities if they think a model with her tits out on page 3 is the most objectionable, campaign-worthy aspect of The Sun. Never mind the rampant xenophobia, there are women being paid to pose topless, something must be done! Prudish imbeciles.

There was an almost complete lack of logic in both sides of this debate. From the way OP described it, I was expecting Marsden to take each of her opponents vacuous arguments head on, rather than relying on anecdotal evidence as a counter. Yeah, I totally get that. Jezebel would never publish an interview without some lip service to their brand of feminism. Nevertheless I do worry that some of the positives resulting from this book will be mitigated as a result of this viewpoint.

“There’s a sense of, ‘adult men would want to have sex with this woman, so she’s incapable of committing a sexual crime.’ This perpetuates the harmful patriarchal stereotype that female sexuality can’t be violent—that it’s simply there for male use with no agency of its own, that it doesn’t hold power,” she told Jezebel Odd then that so many feminists, denizens of Jezebel included, that downplay female sex offenders. It's almost as if they're supportive of "patriarchy" when it suits their needs.…

The problem here isn't that she used other people's clips - I'm fairly sure that would be considered fair use - but that she didn't credit the Youtubers that provided that content and, more importantly, that she requested thousands of dollars to do so: "Creating these videos take a lot of time and money to produce. By who? It's a useful tool, one that's subject to revision. A lot of the complaints I hear about the "soft sciences" are problems intrinsic to studying human behaviour (the sheer number of variables). No shit it's easier to apply the scientific method to phsyics, chemistry, biology etc, but that doesn't mean studying human behaviour on the macro and micro scale is a worthless endeavour. To suggest otherwise is damaging, anti-intellectual horse shit.

I think it's a little harsh to refer to academics who have genuine fear for their reputations and livelihood as "enablers who cover for radicals". Denouncing someone for not standing up to something is all very easy when you're not confronted with the same pressures.

I certainly don't. I'm a mutualist myself, which is a different form of socialism - though Marx did crib a fair amount of his economic analysis from Proudhon's What is Property? I'm criticising you for deflecting criticism of socialism by switching terms, rather than rebutting the thrust of the argument. The Labour parties of most Western countries were historically Marxist, so you claiming otherwise is appeasement of someone ignorant of socialism, or ignorance of socialism on your own part.

That's not what MechPlasma was saying. Any decent criminal justice system relies on the concepts that the accused is innocent until proven guilty and that for the accused to be convicted of a crime it must be proven beyond reasonable doubt. The fact that this man was acquitted of rape is not sufficient evidence in the eyes of the law that his accuser is guilty of making a false rape accusation.

That's leaving a lot to genetic chance. Why limit yourself to tissue that's probably not going to be present on your offspring? Earlobes are pretty useless, so they're a prime candidate to surgically remove if you're not satisfied with removing penile tissue. You shouldn't limit yourself man. I partially agree with this article. From the WHO website "Female genital mutilation (FGM) includes procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. Some were, some weren't. Just as some men were happy working themselves to death to support their family and some reluctantly complied. Differences of outlook and experience like this are exactly why the idea of sexism = prejudice + power is so wrong. Feminism isn't necessarily an anti-statist ideology, so the actions of the Suffragettes should probably be considered in similar terms to other non-violent resistance like the Civil Rights Movement in the US and Gandhi's civil disobedience in British-ruled India. Assuming that Goldberg's contentions are true and feminism, nay all progressives, are significantly related to fascists and thus Nazis - despite his apparent distinction between Nazism and fascism generally. What she's describing is a trend that runs deep through modern feminism. It's a central tenant of most people that giving birth to a child you can't afford to care for is a bad idea. This has nothing to do with genetics and everything to do with economic practicality. So we're done then. You've proved by argument for me. If everyone is a eugenicist, and feminists are like Nazis because both are eugenicists, everyone is like the Nazis. They support birth control for the reasons they give repeatedly in books, articles, pamphlets, talks etc. They support state provision of birth control, particularly for the poor because they don't have equal access due to having less money. We're talking about individual people. "I can't afford to have a child so I will use birth control" is not a eugenic statement. If it is then pretty much everyone is a eugenicist and your shady conspiracy encompasses almost everyone. Lectures against teen pregnancy? Eugenics. Handing out free condoms to parts of Africa with high AIDS rates? Eugenics. Provision of abortions for any reason? Eugenics. This raises an obvious question. It's not irrelevant what "follower feminists" are arguing for, as they're feminists themselves. If your comparison of feminism to Nazism relies on excluding the vast majority of feminists it's even more unsound. Economic and personal reasons for abortion are not eugenics. "I'm too poor, this child is unplanned I'm getting an abortion" is not eugenics unless the person getting the abortion thinks they have a poverty gene and want to remove it from the gene pool. So you ARE ignoring the genetic component of eugenics. Because the reason poor people are provided with birth control is because they're not as likely to be economically able to provide sufficient care for the child and it costs the state less in the long run, not because they think poor people are genetically inferior. Thanks for the link. I shall check it out when I've finished reading the more recent Song of Ice and Fire novels. Correct me if I'm wrong, but previously you seemed to be suggesting that because people in the past favoured birth control for eugenic ends - that is removing perceived faulty genes from the gene pool - that somehow this means that other uses of birth control for non-genetic, social advances also constitute eugenics. Eugenics was near universally abandoned however, so even though certain organisations provided birth control for eugenic reasons in the past it doesn't hold that that's their reason…

Eugenics is all about genetics. Feminism views abortion rights as important because they want to be able to choose when or when not to give birth. Deciding not to have a child because you don't have the resources to care for it effectively, or simply because you don't want a child at that point in time, is greatly different from saying poor people shouldn't give birth because doing so would negatively impact the gene pool. You haven't demonstrated that eugenics is an important aspect of feminism. Tacking the word "social" onto the front of eugenics doesn't instantly change the terms meaning to include anything involving social or behavioral change. I still haven't seen credible information that feminists widely support anything like eugenics. You might as well tell me that Republicans don't wear Swastika arm-bands like Feminists. There's a strong difference between feminists notions of patriarchy and the Nazi claims about "International Jewry". The former is deeply flawed mode of institutional and social analysis, the latter claims an actual conspiracy. Many Republicans feel that they're the victims of the gay agenda, some to the extent th…

But your argumentational form does render your argument invalid. If we applied to other groups pretty much everyone would be like a Nazi, so the comparison is utterly useless. Are Republicans like Nazis? Are Democrats like Nazis? I've seen arguments advanced for both propositions that are really quite similar to yours. If true that would make a staggering chunk of America like Nazis. While coming with the counter-examples I posted earlier I found many shitty articles claiming Muslims are like Na…

Who are you "guys"? I'm not making any demands for a dissertation on your part, just pointing out why what you linked to doesn't support the idea that a comparison between Nazism and Feminism is useful or justified. It's just a brief, selective history of euthanasia and German women in the Nazi party and Nazi society, followed by a vague, Beckian exhortation to join the dots. The comments underneath are equally confusing, talking about feminist belief in eugenics something I've haven't seen from…

I'm really not sure what point you're trying to make in your first paragraph. Care to elucidate? As for Kosovo, we're veering massively off-topic here, but from what I can gather from you're post your understanding of the conflict is quite flawed, perhaps you're confusing it with earlier Yugoslav wars. People didn't refuse to believe "it could happen", they were all too eager to believe it could happen as they spoke and wrote about it in detail despite it NOT happening. The mainstream media were…

I'd already read that article and drawn my own conclusions that haven't changed upon re-reading it. Those conclusions are that people really shouldn't be so quick to make Nazi comparisons. "What i will do, however, is say with unmitigated conviction that this sort of thing most definitely CAN happen again…and now, and here. It happened again in Europe barely 50 years after WW2 in Bosnia (see Adam Jones’ “Effacing the Male”)" I found this passage particularly ironic, given that it was Nazi compar…

What part of my previous responses to you show that I'm not understanding your arguments. You claim that feminism can be compared to Nazism and list five points in support of that claim. I point out that those points can be applied to another political group, demonstrating that these similarities are not a good reason for Nazi comparisons. I am literally making the comparison between feminists and republicans using your examples for why the former should be compared to Nazis. I wasn't playing ma…

You can pretty much substitute "feminists" and "men" with any perceived oppressor and victim. "I'm saying Republicans are like nazis because: They scapegoat an 'other'(homosexuals) as responsible for 'oppression' they can't show, but KNOW exists. They utilize phrases like 'for the good of the children' to cover highly prejudicial, and lopsided legislation and policy. They have engaged in a 50 year long anti-homosexual propaganda campaign, and have hidden or ignored realities that don't mesh with…

It was you and klonozopanour that originally made the assertions without evidence, not I. Nevertheless, in the spirit of advancing the discussion beyond "It is" vs "no it isn't", I shall explain why I disagree with Nazi comparisons in almost all instances. Pretty much anything can be compared to Nazism. However, as an ideology that has so many extremely negative connotations, the vast majority of comparisons are useless to anyone but the most shallow propagandist. If feminists had started intern…

It's not apt at all, it's extreme hyperbole.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
