Non working "home makers" will justify their "worth" from the salaries of paid help (private chef, house cleaner, laundry service, decorator, etc.) However upon divorce, these services are no longer being provided, yet the bread winning spouse must continue to pay. It's as if getting a divorce provides a retirement plan to the "home maker". It might make sense that this "worth" justifies the 50/50 asset split, but not post divorce service payments with no service.

The house is just one piece of the financial puzzle that can be negotiated. Find something that she will want (a car), and say "I'll let you take the car, I'll keep the house". The judge only gets involved if you two can't agree. And keep in mind that lawyers make more money the longer you two disagree.

My two cents. Wife filed after 29 yr marriage, she don't work, got half the assets and 30% of my net for life. I'm 58 in Michigan. Nothing to be done for those of us that worked hard to provide a great life and got the shaft. Wish I was taught divorce law in high school. My thought is that someone needs to start a GoFundMe account to pay to post the best comments from this sub on billboards, radio ads, and any other media that might save some young man from becoming us.

I'm having a similar dialog with my lawyer. Ive heard stories of murderers getting off because they didn't get their Miranda rights. I was hoping to find someone on this thread who could provide some legal argument to convince the judge that I shouldn't be penalized for someone else's error, and better yet, that a signed form means what the form says.

I had a judgment of divorce that has me paying spousal support as well as a part of my yearly bonus as a percentage. In Michigan, there is a uniform spousal support order form that has a section 11 which contains the yearly bonus language from the judgment of divorce. Yes, most of the money that was spent on lawyers was me trying to argue why I thought someone not wanting to work would justify them not having to work (ever again). Took multiple lawyers (some unpaid) to convince me that this is how it works. But I couldn't have just rolled over, at least I know I tried. I'm convince that the system is designed to split assets/income in such a way that reduces the likelihood of either party requiring societies assistance, and has little to do with "fair"

I wasted a ton of cash on lawyer & mediation thinking that my contribution to the retirement funds(95%) would get me more than 50% at split. No such luck.
