I'm at the same level as you. But basically I don't say the next sentence before she make an eye contact. So I often tap them on the shoulder or wait after saying "Hi" until she turns her head and has full attention on me. Yeah sometimes they run away because they're scared but it all happens after an eye contact. I don't want them to just ignore me and walk away it looks like a catcalling so I always make it a full interaction even it's a horrible one. Hope that helps you a little?
