This makes a lot more sense. Would you say the improvement then is learning how to increase the best qualities you already have while also learning why you have less the desirable qualities as opposed to rejecting them? Honestly it seems to me this is a great approach at improving and I like how you accept the fact that you may never fully realize who you are as a man. Making it more about the journey than the destination.

Yea I don’t believe that men should strive for definitions of masculinity that aren’t suitable to them. And I also dislike how men are expected to be providers and shamed for not doing so. For myself, I do desire to help people and I feel great when doing so causes others to validate my masculinity, however it being an EXPECTATION is wrong.

Honestly, although I mentioned it in my post, much of the “aggression” and “negativity” I see many people online mentioning in regard to “toxic masculinity” seems very rare. Most of the men I’ve met over the years that have this perceived hyper aggressiveness are merely broken and abused men that are coping with their circumstances. And that’s not the majority.

This is a great insight. I guess my question is, after learning yourself and who you are as a man, how do you know what to strive for? Self improvement is a huge motivator of mine, and I would like to know how you find ways to improve yourself along this line of thought.

I think the important part is finding out for yourself. As some other replies have stated, the only definition that matters is your own definition. I honestly hate how political definitions of masculinity get and I don’t like how it’s constantly being defined for us.

I agree. I do want to emphasize that it was indeed my own definition of masculinity and I believe all men should have the right to define it for themselves.

It is a more traditional approach to being “masculine.” I mentioned gender norms. But I wouldn’t consider it “conservative” as much as it’s just the type of man I want to be. My own definition of masculinity. It has nothing to do with what I think a man SHOULD be but rather what I WANT to be. That being said, I do appreciate this reply and I’d like to hear how you yourself define masculinity.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
