I have been with my current girlfriend for a bit over a year and it is healthy and happy. I am still a very independent person, and I don't put up with bullshit. But I give her that same respect and it works well. If it stops being a benefit to my life, I'll leave. There is no aspect of my life that is dependent on her, and she knows it.
