Most of the time when we use female infront of something its when being a female in that context is challenging, like a female journalist in a third world country, or some media conglomerates where female journalists are sexually harrassed or assaulted. I agree referring to every female journalist in every context is weird. Buts it equally wierd to say Emmet Till is a child who was lynched in the South.
