Maybe 28 now I think? I might be off by one or two years at the most.

My opinion isn't worth much, but it's all I've got. Hope it makes some sense. Your opinion is worth more than you give it credit for.

The car was moving, my mom is refusing to take sides (for the most part, not altogether though). I am not going to do the test, although I'm sure it would give me the results I'd want. Cool in idea maybe, not so much in practice :). And yes, she did start the verbal assault. I did reply back in, probably a meaner fashion, but only because she 1) started the fight, 2) she was literally trying to make me mad, and 3) she was very persistent about it (almost non-stop for the entire 2-3 minutes of th…

Erg. That's how my sober sister is... She isn't really a drinker though. Smokes cigarettes/pot though. I didn't realize how common this kind of violence was until this thread :/.

*At the opposing door. At first I didn't include that fact I was in a car. I edited it after, just to try to keep the story as unbiased as possible. Sorry for the confusion.

I do, and I actually contemplated cross-posting to /r/feminism too, too see what the reaction was. I did mention the bias of posting in /mensrights in my post though ;)

I will definitely think about doing a letter, if this doesn't blow over soon. As for my dad, he is staying out thus far, altogether.

Thank you for the comment. So far I'm finding a good amount of support on reddit ;).

Yes, I would like to believe I would do it again, had I found myself in the same situation.

This comment seems a lot more light-hearted than the first. Thanks for clarifying ;).

It pisses me off when people tell me to "man-up" and apologize. To me that makes no sense, and I know exactly how you must have felt. I do really want to stand my ground though, and I believe the consequences ahead shouldn't be too huge; either way I think I am going to take the chance.

As persuasive as a letter would be, and not trying to insult the idea, but it comes off as... corny? I live at my parents house over school vacations, and I find it easy enough to talk to them in person about it. As for the email, I'm one of the only computer savvy people in my family (if not the only), so no one would get it. I've tried my best to keep people not-involved, and I am still trying to take that stance. Sadly, my sister has texted everyone within the immediate family, sending them p…

God, I love the support of reddit, but the answers all seem to be so depressingly true. I'm going to have to move over to /r/funny and try to regain some faith in humanity.

I'll do my best! But she is both stubborn and willing to hold a grudge, I believe. I have yet to here her side of the story, but I'm fairly certain she is more than willing to leave out a lot of key details...

This seems to be the common trend in advice, and I'm leaning to think it's correct. Thank you.

If only I could have walked away (I was in a car, but even if I wasn't I'm not sure I have the willpower ;) )...

I agree. Luckily, the sunglasses were fixed, but they are getting very worn from all this bending back and forth ;)

Thank you, and I'm thankful for the support. For the comical relief of the matter, when I read: If I'd hit a man, I have to hit a woman. To not hit her is sexist. I read it as: If I had hit a man, I have to hit a woman. To not hit her is sexist. Slightly different, but you can see from what I read, at first, I was a little baffled at your response :)

I've probably got 20lbs on him, but he might be a little bit stronger. I really should start going to the gym though, just don't really know where to start... All that aside, I think we're pretty evenly matched, and I doubt he'll do anything anyway. He is pretty well known for trouble with his anger, but generally he cools off and is okay. All that second part aside, he lives in New York, I in Vermont. His threats were baseless.

She didn't break them, but it was very close. One of the.. uh... legs? What ever they are called; one of the legs was bent almost 90 degrees out of whack. Lucky for her, I could bend them back without too much pain. Although, all this bending is making them weak :/.

It's nice to know reddit is at my back! My girlfriend is also on my side (not simply because she is my girlfriend, I hope). She is an anti-feminist, anti-sexist person, and the behavior of my family riles her up, as well.

Straight forward! My sister totaled her car in the bad weather around Christmas time. My car was under about 2-3 feet of snow, and I had spent the entire yesterday un-digging my mom's car and driveway. She drove me to work the next morning, and picked the both of us up.

I appreciate your response a lot. Part of the reason I made this post was to see, if, maybe I was overlooking something and made an error in judgment and I should apologize. I did my best to keep the original post as unbiased as possible, and will admit I resorted to saying some mean things (whether or not that was justified, I feel it is, is up for debate, also). As per the overwhelming responses in my favor, I no longer have any doubt about defending myself being the correct action to take.

Well, if I were to apologize, it really wouldn't be out of guilt (but it would probably be taken as an admission of guilt regardless). It would be more out of, if I apologize about something, then maybe this would cool down a lot faster. On principle alone, I don't think I should apologize, and would have a very hard time getting myself to do it.

I'm not actually sure what you're trying to get across, it seems you and I disagree on the matter. However, if so, that's fine. Thanks for giving your opinion on the matter, regardless.

I actually called my brother a sexist fuck after he threatened to 'put me in a hospital if i ever did that again, brother or not'. It's depressing how you would think your family had better morals/judgment than the rest of the population, only to come to the sad realization that it's not always true.

I would seriously consider giving an apology for hitting as hard as I did (even if I don't feel it was to forceful, it would show some remorse for the situation in general), if she apologizes first for starting the altercation in the first place. It sounds childish in a way, I admit. But, it's too hard for me to go against my principles in order to make this all go away faster. I'm sure it will all blow away, I guess I'm just taking the long way around.

Thank you for taking the time to write this out. The thing I want to say the most, is the biggest reason I am not apologizing (at least, first) is I do not want to give off any hint that I am admitting guilt, and I feel that's exactly what it would be taken as.

I agree with everything in this comment. However, I can only speak for myself when I say: if you're taking a swing at someone, it's really hard to judge how hard your going to hit. But yes, again, I agree.

Your comment made me happier in the beginning, only to curve down to the sad realization at the end. The worst part is you're right :(.

I am 19, she is 21. She isn't talking to me, nor looking at me. Nor is this the first altercation. It has been years though. Twice, many years ago (4 or 5) she attacked me out of rage (again, first to attack). Both times, I defended myself swiftly and sternly, and hadn't had any problems since. And I am very willing to accept an apology. I was never very angry, but I am willing to defend myself. Thanks for the input, all this support is nice :).

I'll say to you as I did carchamp. Yes, I should try to avoid situations like this, but when people are actively after you, it's hard to slow down and think of repercussions. As for walking away, though, this all went down really fast, and whilst in a car, so there wasn't any way to walk away, per se (I mean, maybe should have at least attempted to tone her out, but in a small car where someones actively after you, it's difficult*.

I probably should have just stopped, but when you have someone actively trying to get on your nerves, it's difficult. This all happened withing 2-3 minutes, so it did all go over very fast. It's a sad truth how things are in this country :(. Just to add information, though, I was in a car, so there was no 'walking away' :(.
