Legacy? You'll be forgotten in 1-2 generations. Do the best with the kids you have. Don't need a bunch just to hope for a 'great' one.

Why did you move an hour away? Go to court!

Exactly. And who had more retirement savings? If it's her, then go get some. Shit.

Have you tried therapy? Individual and couples? If no one has stepped out and no one has decided it's 100% over, then give that a shot. A healthy marriage is much better than divorce.

Agreed, and it trickles down to the kids. Family courts are the exact venue for this.

How does your ex still have that ability to affect you? Get a court order blocking her from communication, except about the kids, then track and report any violations. Cure that and who knows what else might improve. Edit: a word

Talk to a lawyer. If you were married for a long time you can get alimony, plus possibly half of combined assets. Doesn't matter if finances are mostly separate, anything gained during the marriage is likely split 50/50. If you made more she'd ask for alimony, so don't let her skip out on that. She's trying to screw you over. Don't let her. Edit: typo

I'm okay with no fault divorce but fault should play into alimony awards more. The system just doesn't want to deal with defining and ruling on the fault.

Yup, this is part of the type of equality they wanted.

Nah, take the money. If you don't want it, donate it. The only way alimony laws will ever change is if enough women start paying to really draw attention to it. Right now it's just a man's problem, so no one gives a shit.

If the inheritance money has always been kept separate then it might be separate property. If it's been commingled then it's almost always joint property. Google your state laws and get a lawyer.

Do some research. Google based on state, length of marriage, etc. You've provided no useful information here and want a bunch of answers. Jesus

She cheated. Her mind was made up before counseling apparently. Fuck her.

He specified CLOSE friends and family. I'd keep it simple, but still share. If she's like most women then she's blaming him behind his back. So I'd shut that right down with the simple truth. Also, when someone cheats they deserve any disdain that comes their way when those actions become known.
/r/Divorce_Men28/03/25 08:52 PM

Don't give her more unless it's truly a nominal amount to get her to sign. Cheaters deserve nothing and 50% is already generous if you contributed more and she cheated.

Also just extending the marriage length potentially increasing the alimony term... Maybe less of a concern in Texas, but in other states that can really fuck you over.

Dude, comparison kills. Cleanliness is overrated with little kids. As long as it's safe and not so dirty it's a health hazard. A room full of toys and decorations is far less important than a dad who spends time with them, plays with them, and teaches them. Being aware of your yelling is huge. Just keep focusing on that and striving to do better. Keep talking that through that in therapy The rest sounds fine. You have limited years, make the most of each day and your kids will remember that and …

No one here can say. You need a lawyer. You'll need as much detail as you can provide on assets and liabilities, income history, length of marriage, pre-marriage assets, etc. Every case is unique. That said, if she makes 4x what you do and the marriage was reasonably long then you absolutely should get some form of support, and the court might order the house sold, which you can probably argue requires certain steps. You need a lawyer. Then fight for what a woman would fight for if roles were re…

Some states say that an abuser can't receive alimony from the abused party. So definitely fight the charge.

I'm not a lawyer, but that seems like weak evidence if there's nothing else. I'd hire a lawyer to try and get it dismissed though so it doesn't end up on your record. Shouldn't really impact housing options either way.
/r/Divorce_Men05/03/25 12:14 AM

Is it a felony charge or misdemeanor? The latter is unlikely to affect housing. Get an attorney either way, if it's what you say and a he said / she said situation with no priors, you'll be fine.

Doubt it. Trump fucked alimony payors. The ultra rich settle alimony with assets, they don't give a fuck about those of us paying with our income. Why would they care about this?

Why not alimony too?

Last sentence most likely doesn't work, in most US states at least. Literally zero consequences for cheating. You can fuck around and still get crazy alimony. A marriage "contract" is extremely one sided.
/r/Divorce_Men18/02/25 05:21 PM

Fuck that. Get the hell out of this now, it won't get better. And longer marriage = more alimony.

If the debt was accrued during the marriage then don't just take it on. Make you're getting out at 50/50 on assets and debt, at minimum. Who earns more? If it's her, get alimony. Also, don't settle for less than 50% time with the kids, and get child support if she earns more. If she's not working, then she needs to. Don't get screwed financially when she made the decision to blow it up. Women have no issues taking advantage of someone they said they loved for while it was advantageous.

You sound like an entitled asshole, ready to abandon your kids because they're not exactly the way you want them to be at ages 11 & 14. They're still young and extremely impressionable. Man up and be a good example and maybe they'll still follow you.

My experience is that you need a succinct script about your ex. A date will ask, and there's no reason to hide from your past. So have something basic and low emotion ready to go. Then change the subject. Anyone divorced or 30s and older has relationship baggage. Don't dwell on it, but don't pretend it's non existent.

Lots of proof. I currently have primary custody of my kids because of that. My youngest is almost 16 and will be driving soon, and wouldn't get in a car with her drunk, so that's not really an issue. Unfortunately for me financially is that the courts treat addiction as a disease, so if she can't work it falls on me to pay for her as if she had fucking cancer or something. I'm being told might be on the hook for lifetime alimony, or until she gets Medicare, so effectively 20 years, because we we…

For sure. We were getting somewhat close in mediation. I was on board with a lot of her requests. Then we get to the final point on alimony and she wouldn't budge off her demands at all. They're ridiculous as she's an alcoholic struggling to work, so she's asking for half my fucking salary. Meanwhile she used to make $100k per year. The mediator wanted to lock in the rest and let the judge decide the alimony. They kept pressuring me. I held and said fuck no, I gave in on several points and have …

Apparently Reddit doesn't like comments criticizing alimony and wage theft. All I said is that men need to push for alimony so eventually enough people are pissed about being on the short end that the system is changed. Long-term alimony that equalizes income is government wage theft. I get support for stay at home parents to become self sufficient and things like that. But when a lazy alcoholic ex needs to maintain their standard of living indefinitely, that's nothing more than indentured servi…

You said in another comment that she's the breadwinner, so of course she's amicable if she's not paying alimony. You're being suckered. Never heard of a woman that would leave money on the table. My ex could earn $150k, but has become a lazy alcoholic, so she's after my money. I make $300k, so I'm paying her no matter what. But she's pushing for half of my $300k instead of half the difference between what I earn and she should earn. She could live perfectly fine on her own income, if she'd work.…

Yeah, waste of time without that. If he's staying on her insurance for a bit she probably earns more and he's giving up alimony. Of course it's not contentious in that case. Women will fight for alimony even if they could earn more. Men will walk away from it. Fucked up system. And who has retirement benefits or savings? How about the house. Those things drive a wedge because women feel entitled to it all even when they cause the breakup.

Men need to go after every dollar they're entitled to under the law. The only way these fucked up divorce and alimony laws change is if women start getting the short end too and enough people start pushing for change.

If your pension value is 2X hers, then maybe. Talk to a lawyer. Generally everything is valued and then spilt 50/50 or "equitably". You might have to give her part of your pension, or you could get some of hers.

I didn't want another kid, and the ex was way hornier off the pill. Win/win. And now that I'm single and dating, it's nice to be able to tell girls that I'm vasectomy safe. More likely to ditch the condom early. Don't overdo it on the red pill sites. Some things can be mutually beneficial.

Agreed. This seems like a possibly fixable situation. So why not give counseling a go. If there was infidelity or other major issues then counseling is generally a waste of time.

That's doesn't work in no fault states, unfortunately. The bitch can break up the marriage and still expect alimony on the basis of reliance on the marriage contract, and contributing to your career asset, and other bullshit like that. Alimony should never be more than a year or two for transition in long-term marriages but the law doesn't fucking care. They see a high earner alon my side, and just take it to give to a worthless alcoholic in my case. Mediation judge literally said it wouldn't ma…

Your question is too basic and you're lacking details. That said, you likely each get half the home equity growth during the marriage. It's not just the change in mortgage, but also appreciation of the asset. If one of you keeps the house, they have to pay the other half of that to buy them out. Also have to look at retirement accounts, vehicles, etc. Get a lawyer to explain it all.

Yeah, maybe I was a little harsh, but sometimes people need to hear the truth. Agree on your point about anger for sure. Women deserve someone with a generally calm and supportive attitude, just as much as we men deserve the same thing. You have to look inward and clean up your own issues to do better in the future. If the marriage fell apart after 2 years, and there are no kids even, then it's hard to blame her for bailing. It's the long-term marriages where the women bails at the first sign of…

Honestly sounds like you're the problem. Fix your issues. A psych ward for a week? I'm generally on the side of men on this sub, but sometimes they're the problem and maybe she dodged a bullet here.

If you go to trial a judge will generally split the assets down the middle, meaning that you get 50% of the net equity in the house in cash. She could get the option to buy you out if she can afford to from other cash or available investments or if she can refinance the mortgage in her name and take out cash to pay you. If you negotiate a settlement, you can get creative. But neither of you gets to pick assets in a contentious divorce. Your best bet is a consultation with a good local attorney. …

New here? Generally net assets are split 50/50 or close to that, at least those acquired or grown during the marriage. I gave my ex all of our home equity ($380k) so I could keep my retirement accounts. Divorce fucking sucks if your the higher earner.
