I'm gen X and bought into the lie that part of a man's role was to "put up" with mistreatment from his wife because he is supposed to be the stronger one. Maybe that was more of a badge of honor and a sign of love back in the day, when a husband's choice to remain married to a nasty wife was out of compassion rather than fear of how she might weaponize the legal system against him.

Much of the problem has to do with how men and women are wired socially from an early age.
