I remember one time I commented that I don't mind making more than my husband and we're pretty happy together and I got "Well it sounds like you married a loser and you're not someone I'd want to be with." These are the same men calling women gold diggers and that they feel reduced to how much money they can make. That was the last time I tried being empathetic lol. They don't know what they want. I'd argue many of the "progressive" advancements in modern society have some sort of connection to the rise of deaths of despair if not being directly responsible. Off the top of my head, religious organizations used to act as third spaces and a place for community involvement and outreach.
